(DAR lists this as part of the 5th Battalion.) 2. "Muster roll of James Watson's Company of Militia of Lancaster County, commanded by Colonel David Jenkins, 1778: 6th class Valentine Ranck."

Private, 3rd class, serving in the Lancaster County Militia under Capt. James Watson and under Col. David Jenkins in the 1st Company of the 5th Battalion, the same unit in which Michael's father Valentine served. (Source: PA Archives, Vol. 7, p 992). One reference also shows him as a member of Capt. Alexander McIlvain's Company of the Lancaster County Militia's 5th Battalion commanded by Col. Jacob Carpenter in 1782.
