[NI3581] Durst was a close friend of Jacob Harshbarger, and came to America with him. They landed in Philadelphia 30 Aug 1749 on the ship "Crown" from Rotterdam with 500 passengers. Durst was a farmer and a weaver. He gave military service with the Third Battallion, Lancaster Co, PA Militia in the Rev War. Durst is listed in the 1782 tax list for Cocalico Twp, Lancaster, PA. He later moved to Botetourt Co, VA. In 1786 he was granted 504 acres on Looney's Mill Creek (Botetourt Co) by Patrick Henry.
[NI3700] A pleasing story is told.... The Germans in that day had a custom which permitted the girls to "pop the question" on St. Valentine's day. They baked little biscuits cut outwith their thimbles, and on this day would go on the streets and offer this bread to any young man they wished. If he accepted these biscuits it was understood he accepted the girl also. A young girl named Eva Ronk offers hers to Durst Ammen, which was accepted and thus they were engaged and married in 1759. Many of her descendants are found in both the second and third divisions of the Harshbargers.
[NI5002] Michael Ammen inherited the Durst Ammen homeplace in 1791, in the Mill Creek area, called "Willow Grove."
[NI5007] David Ammen edited and owned and published with his brother John, the "Herald of Virginia and Weekly Advertiser" in 1800, in Fincastle. David moved to Ohio in 1810.
