[NI453] Edmund Scott settled in Farmington, CT, with children, at an early date, and married the widow of Thomas Upson. He was one of the freemen of Farmington of 1669 and one of the proprietors of 1672. A subscriber of 1674, he was among the earliest that came to Mattatuck (Waterbury.) He regular allotments of fence, etc., indicate that with him there was no vascillation of purpose, and that he discharged, seasonably, all his obligations. He is mentioned as grantee as late as 21 Jan 1689/90. His will was presented to court in April 1691. His nine children are named on the probate record, several of whom remained in Waterbury. Edmund's home lot contained two acres, and was bounded, 10 Feb 1687/88, north on highway, south on common, east on John Carrington's land, and west on Thomas Richason's land.

[NI1960] Occupation: Carpenter. Rev. War - Served (Private) from 21 Apr 1777 to 21 Apr 1780 in Capt. Holmes Co from East Haddam, CT. In 1815 Jehiel Gates came from the Green Mts. of Vermont and explored the new country. The next year he was followed by a number of families and young men from Addison and Rutland Cos., among whom were Charles Oliver, Joshua Healy, Elisha and John Robinson, Joseph Phelps, Jesse Bridge, Josiah Pond, Joseph Cobb, Martin Smith, Newman Bell, Capt. John Robbins, "Put" Rich, Judge David Demery, Jehiel and his sons Gross and James Gates, Arad Sheldon, Silas Brookins, Isaiah Goodeno, and Venare Cook. These people located in and around Beachville.
[NI1957] James and Martia Gates followed his father, Jehiel, and his siblings from Litchfield, CT, to East Shoreham, VT, about 1813-1814. In 1815 his father scouted out a new settlement area in Steuben Co, NY. In 1816, Jehiel, along with his sons, James and Gross, and the younger siblings, moved from VT to near Dansville, Steuben Co, NY. The next year James' wife, Martia, died, leaving 4 children, one an infant son. By 1820 James married again. He moved his family to Monroe Co, NY for a few years, and by 1832 had moved to Spring, Crawford Co, PA, where he lived the rest of his life.
[NI1962] It appears that Jehiel moved to Shoreham, Addison Co, Vermont before his father, as the 1810 census lists the elder Jehiel Gates in Litchfield, CT, and the younger in Shoreham, VT. Jehiel Gates of Shoreham, VT served as a sergeant in the War of 1812 from 14 Oct 1813 to 17 Nov 1813 in Capt. Asahel Scovill's Co, Regiment of Riflemen (VT). Served from 12 Apr 1814 to 20 May 1814 in Co. of Capt. James Gray Jr., Sumner's Regiment (VT). He bought land in Dansville, Steuben Co, NY 21 Mar 1820. Later in 1820 his family was living in Ridgeway, Orleans Co, NY and in 1830 they were in the adjacent town of Barre. Jehiel died before 1840 in Royalton, Niagara County, NY. Census records indicate that he had one son and five daughters, but only one daughter has been positively identified.
[NI1964] War of 1812 - Gross Gates (Private) served from 15 Oct 1813 to 17 Nov 1813 in Capt. Asahel Scoville's Co, Col. Clark's Regiment of Riflemen (VT). Volunteered to go to Plattsburgh, Sep 1814 and served 6 days in Capt. Sam'l. Hand's Co. Bought land in Dansville, Steuben Co, NY on 25 Jan 1827, which he and his wife sold on 14 Aug 1830.
[NI1965] Abigail is named as the Aunt of Mary Ann (Gates) Dimick.
[NI4132] Clara is named as the Aunt of Mary Ann (Gates) Dimick.
