INDEX

[NI5144] Ruling Elder of Conaghmore, county Donegal, 1678-79.

[NI5133] William Homes was born in Northern Ireland, and when a young man came to Martha's Vineyard, where he taught school for three years, 1686-1689. He returned to Ireland, where in 1692 he was ordained over the parish of Strabane, and he married the next year. He continued as pastor of this church until 1714/1715, when with his wife and nine children he crossed the ocean and made his future home in Chilmark, where he was ordained pastor 15 Sep 1715. He was pastor there until he died. He was the author of five printed volumes, three of them published during his life, and the two after his death were on "Family Prayer" and "Family Government." He preferred and recommended moderate Presbyterianism to the evils which he thought he saw in the Congregationalism by which he was surrounded. His name does not often appear on the records of New England ecclesiastical history for this reason, and also on account of his not being a graduate of Yale or Harvard, and his duties being discharged on a secluded island. He died at the age of 83. He was preaching in his pulpit and fell down suddenly in a fit, and gradually declined to his death. A slate stone in the graveyard of Chilmark marks his burial place. It bears the following inscription: "In memory of the Reverend learned eminently prudent and pious Mr William Homes late pastor of the Church of Christ in Chilmark who departed this life June 27, 1756 in ye 84th year of his age". His wife, Katherine, lies by his side.

[10361] Scots Presbyterian Minister
