[NI8175] Nathaniel's early life was spent in assisting his father to cultivate the possessions he had inherited. His first public employment was in a military capacity in the war between Great Britain and France, 1754-1760. He was appointed a Major in the Provincial forces of New York, and served as such in the army under Gen. Abercrombie. Their intent was the reduction of Ticonderoga and Crown Point. Nathaniel distinguished himself by his daring and bravery in the assault on Ticonderoga. Along with Major Richard Hewlett, of Queens, and 668 men, under Captain Bradstreet, he captured Fort Frontenac in June of 1758. In 1760 he served as Colonel of the Third Regiment, New York Provincials, under Gen. Jeffrey Amherst, which marched against Montreal and effected the final reduction of Canada. Nathaniel's journal, written during the expeditions against Montreal, was published in Boston in 1760. Nathaniel was a representative from Suffolk Co, NY, in the Colonial Assembly in 1769, and for the six consecutive years preceeding the Revolution. In 1775 the Provincial Congress appointed him Brigadier General of the Militia of Suffolk and Queens Counties, Long Island. In August 1775 he was elected President of the New York Provincial Congress. In 1776 he was appointed to the command at Jamaica, Long Island. While there, and waiting for reinforcements, he was captured by the British, and received mortal wounds in the process. He was taken to a British prison ship, and eventually moved to a house-hospital at the New Utrecht Church, where he soon died.
