[NI920] Moved to Sandwich, Cape Cod about 1662. He moved to Martha's Vineyard (Tisbury) in 1668/9 with Josiah Standish and William Pabody. He moved to Chilmark abt 1686. He was one of the leading spirits of Tisbury and Chilmark, and one of the largest land holders. At one time or another he owned seven of the original home lots on the west side of Old Mill Brook, besides all the dividends accruing from them. In 1675 he was made Assistant under the Mayhew regime, and after the Island came under the jurisdiction of Massachusetts he was one of the first three Justices of the Peace. He became Selectman of Chilmark in 1704. He refused many important offices but wielded temendous influence and had the honor of being the first one to hold an office on the Island who was not related by blood or marriage with the all powerful Mayhew family. In 1701 he gave Tisbury the land for a burial place and new meeting house. He is buried in that graveyard. His tombstone reads "Here lyes the body of James Allen Esqr. aged 78 years died July ye 25th 1714".

[NI921] John Allen was a wealthy man, a large land holder and speculator. He was a Colonel in the Island Militia, and High Sheriff of the County 1714-33. Resident: Chilmark, Mass.
[NI1122] Resident: Tisbury, Mass. Died in his 42nd year. All of his children were then minors, and the property was not divided until 3 Mar 1734.
[NI1124] Graduated from Yale University in 1708, at age 19. In 1710 he preached a short time at Chatham, and appears to have been at Barnstable though not in a ministerial capacity. He married at Barnstable. In 1715 he is found with his wife Elizabeth at the resettlement of Worcester, where he preached for two years. They moved to Bridgewater where on 17 Aug 1717 he preached the first time in the newly incorporated South Parish, and on 9 Jul 1718 was ordained its pastor. He preached his last sermon there on 11 Oct 1730. He then moved to Falmouth, Maine, now Portland, where a new Second Parish was being formed at Cape Elizabeth. He was installed there 10 Nov 1734, and resided there until his death.
