Served in the Revolutionary War under Capt. Aaron Lewis of Col. William Campbell's Regiment of the Virginia Militia. He also served under Capt. John Jimerson at Butcher's Station, Campbells Station. He also served under Capt. James Dysant at the Battle of King's Mountain, where he was shot several times.
