[NI24] Franklin was just 17 years old when his father died. He went to work to help support his mother and the family. He freighted from the Missouri River up the Niobrara River into Nebraska. Later he was a trader of race horses. About 1900 Franklin bought some land close to Spencer, Nebraska, next to his brother John Osborn. In 1904, Mauda talked Franklin into selling the farm and moving to new lands. They travelled with two teams on one covered wagon, pulling another wagon behind. One day Mauda, who was pregnant, was standing between the wagons when they started to move, knocking her down and running over her hips. About two weeks later she delivered baby Mansfield, two months early. The next spring the family went to Ohio to find work, and stayed there for about two years. The family next moved to Redfield, South Dakota, where Mauda's mother lived. In the spring of 1910 the family moved back to Spencer, Nebraska, where Franklin's mother lived. Late the next year the family was again on the move, with three wagons, two of them covered, cows, chickens, dog, and all. They wintered in Bonefield, South Dakota, then went on to Three Buttes, Montana the next fall. Mauda filed for homestead lands near Enid, Montana. (Certificate #650163 issued on 11 Oct 1918, for 320 acres, W1/2 plus the S1/2SE1/4 of Section 14, Township 22N, Range 54E, Montana PM.) The first winter they built and lived in the granery. In the spring they built a sod house. Franklin was gone most of the time working. Around 1917 Mauda divorced him, and he moved back to Nebraska. Franklin's last residence was in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he died and is buried.

[NI1005] In the Spring of 1870 it is believed that Daniel and Jane left Sweetwater, IL with their two eldest daughters by covered wagon for Nebraska, settling near Thayer. He obtained his homestead certificate #3498, 18 Sep 1876. He later left his homestead and entered business in Thayer. By 1889 he was operating a restaurant and livery barn named the Blue Front Livery Barn in Bradshaw, NE. A tornado hit the little town of Bradshaw and demolished the whole town. Daniel and his family only had the clothing on their backs left. They were in a cave at the time, and there was nothing left of the house they lived in except the floor. About two years later they moved to KS to a farm that Daniel bought. They went there by covered wagon and they lived in a sod house. There were droughts and prairie fires while they were there, and it never rained. They would plant wheat and other crops in the Spring, only to have them burned up by hot winds. At last a prairie fire came that destroyed everything that they had. Sometime between 1903 and 1904 they moved to York, NE, where they lived until he died.
[NI1009] No children.
