[NI9055] Philip Groves was among the first settlers at Stratford and was appointed the Ruling Elder in 1654, and the only one, of the Stratford Church. He seems to have married Ann, daughter of Rev. Henry Smith of Wethersfield, for John Blakeman, Jr., who married another daughter, calls Philip Groves "brother." 1642 first Deputy of the town, 1647 juryman at Hartford, but living in Stratford. 1653 appointed with Wm. Beardsley by General Court to settle question of boundaries between Fairfield and Norwalk. 1655 elected Deputy, 1656 appointed again. 1656 appointed leather sealer for Stratford. May 1666 grand jury for the colony. Will dated 30 Feb 1672/3, probated 6 Feb 1675/6. Mentions wife Ann, grandchildren Nathaniel Porter, Sarah Porter, Hannah Porter, and Ruth Porter; Nathaniel Porter a son in law; to his sister Susanna Grant, a widow near Bristol, England; brother John Grove, servant Rebecca Andrews and Nathaniel Homerston. Overseers Isreal Chancy, Capt. William Curtis, and Joseph Hawley. Witnesses John Brinsmaid and Henry Tomlinson. Inv. taken 14 Feb 1675/6 by William Curtiss and John Pickett, Henry Wakeling and John Wells, and filed 14 Feb 1675/6.
