Making Cute Flashcards the Easy Way with Print Shop 6 or Earlier Versions
The instructions below are for Print Shop Version 6 or earlier. I am using this program instead of others, as it seems to have the most user friendly way of doing this. If you care to use a program such as Print Artist, Print Masters, Create-a-Card, or Card Studio, you will need to enter the words into your address book in the name field.
Part 1 - Choosing the Font
Most Font Archives store their fonts in "zip" format. You will be able to tell that this is indeed the case, by looking at the last three letters of the file's name after the period. If you see "zip", then you will need an unzipping program in order to use the fonts. It would be better if you have your "unzipping" program installed before you download fonts off the Internet. Choose the font that you would like to use, either from this archive or another, and begin the downloading process. Normally after the font has been downloaded, your unzipping program will immediately open up and you should see some file names. Double click on the file titled "Read Me", and note any special terms for using the font. After closing the "Read Me" window, click on the button labeled "Extract" or a similiar name. Do not click on "Install". Navigate in the window that shows your files on the hard drive. Find "My Documents" and highlight it. Then choose the option that says "New Folder". Give your new folder a name such as "My Downloaded Fonts". Making sure that your "My Downloaded Fonts" file is highlighted in the little window, choose "Extract". Remember this location, and the name of the file, and close your unzipping program.
Part 2 - Preparing to use the Font
On your Desktop, find the icon that says "My Documents". Double click on it, and in the new window that opens up find the folder labeled "My Downloaded Fonts". Double click on it, and find the font that you want to use. It should have a "ttf" after the period. Highlight that filename and put your "capslock" key down. Now hold down your "Control" and "C" keys at the same time. This will copy the file's contents to the "Clipboard" program. Now close all the windows that are open, so that you are again looking at the Desktop. Click anywhere on your desktop, and then hold down your "Control" key and "V" this time. A new folder should appear with the title of your font. Double click on the folder to open it up, and then click on the little line in the upper right hand corner of the window. You should now see the folder in the tray at the bottom of your screen.
Some fonts, especially the ones with pictures in the background, do not use capital and small letters in the normal way. They may use just small, just capital, or capital and small. Some also do not include all the punctuation marks either. In order to determine what characters are in your font, go to:
START --- PROGRAMS--- ACCESSORIES --- SYSTEM TOOLS--- CHARACTER MAP
The "Character Map" program shows you all the characters that the designer put into the font. In the "Fonts" box select the font that you wish to use. You will then see small boxes with all the letters or pictures that are included in the font. Click the little boxes of the characters and look in the lower right hand corner for "Keystrokes". You will be able to see what keys you must use in order to see the font. You will need to remember this, so that you will know whether to type in all caps, all smalls, or caps and smalls. Once you know, close all your windows down, but leave your font still showing in the "desktop tray".
Part 3 - Setting up Print Shop to Print your Cards
Double check to make sure that your font is still showing in the desktop tray. Now start your "Print Shop" program. I am using "Print Shop 6 SE". You will need to choose a project that "Print Shop" will automatically tile on the page. Decide on what size of card you will need, and choose a project in one of the following categories that most closely matches the size that you want: Postcards, Business Cards, Post-it Notes, or Labels. Choose "Next" until you get to the workspace.
The first thing you will need to do is make a dotted border, so you will know where to cut. Go to:
INSERT --- MINI-BORDER
and find a dotted or very fine line and insert it into your project. With the border highlighted, choose:
ARRANGE ---SIZE TO PANEL
and: ARRANGE - LAYER - BRING TO FRONT
Now choose:
INSET --- TEXT BLOCK
and pull the sides out until they just touch the mini-border.
Double click the Text Block as if you were going to type in it. After deleting the little messaage about double clicking, RIGHT CLICK in the box and choose "Insert Address/List Field". In the resulting "Select List Type" box, choose "Custom List". In the "Select Custom Field" box, highlight "Line 1", and then click OK.
We will now make our Custom List. Go to:
TOOLS - EDIT CUSTOM LIST
and in the resulting window "New List". Thinking about the font that you want to use, type your entries using all capitals, all smalls, or all capitals and smalls. Type each entry in the Field 1 box and don't forget to push the "Add Entry" button, after each word. When you are finished, choose "Save List", give your list a distinctive name, and then push "Save". In the "Edit Custom List" window, choose the "OK" button at the bottom of the window.
Back in the "workspace", highlight the "Line 1", choose:
TEXT - FONT
and select your font, size, and color. When choosing the size, do not choose a size so large that longer words will not fit. If you are finished, choose "OK", and click on the edge of your project, to close the text block window.
Part 3 - Printing Your Project
Choose:
FILE - PRINT.
In the resulting window choose "Change List". This should bring up another window where you will see your words. If you do not, choose "Open Another List" and select the name of your list and then "Open". If you want to print all of your words, choose "Select All", and then "OK". Look carefully at the Preview Window, to make sure none of your words are cut off. Leave "Number of Copies" at 1(the 1 means one of each), and then choose "Print".
Part 4 - Making Large Flashcards
Follow all the instructions for Part 1. In Part 2 open a tall blank page. Choose:
INSERT - TEXT BLOCK
and: ARRANGE - SIZE TO PANEL.
Now choose:
ARRANGE - SCALE
and select "24%" and "Vertical Only" and "OK". Again, add a Mini-Border and pull on its sides and those of the text block, so that they meet. Now click on only the border and choose:
ARANGE - LAYER - SEND TO BACK. Holding down the "Shift" key, click on the border, and the text block to select them both and then go to:
ARRANGE - GROUP
Make your Custom List, like above, except enter one different word in Line 1, Line 2, Line 3, and Line 4, before clicking "Add Entry". Back in the "Workspace", click on the now grouped textblock and border. Choose:
EDIT - COPY
and then: EDIT - PASTE
Do this 3 times, and arrange your cards evenly on the page.
Go to the first text/border combination, clicl on it and choose:
ARRANGE - UNGROUP
Double click just the text block, then right click and choose "Insert Address/List Field", then "Custom List" and "OK". Highlight "Line 1" and then "OK". Do the same for each text block, but for the second BLOCK choose "Line 2', the third, Line 3" and the fourth, Line 4". Choose the font, size, and color for each text box.
You are now ready to print, following the instructions above.
