Samuel Marjoribanks
called Samuel M. Banks Sr. in America

Thanks!

Samuel M. Marjoribanks was born in 1770 in Thornhill, Perthshire, Scotland, the eldest son of John Marjoribanks b.1743 and Helen Murdoch.

John (b.1743) was a dyer of cloth. He came to America in ca. 1785 and worked for Whites' Mill on Fishing Creek, York Co. SC. He was dead by 1790 and his son Samuel came to SC to look for him in 1794 (date per tombstone). Samuel wore a kilt the 1st Sunday which caused a stir and did not feel at home until he heard the Psalms lined out in the old way. Samuel dropped the "Marjori" from his surname. I (James Green) have never found his name spelled Marjoribanks, Marchbanks, etc. in the US in contemporary records.

Samuel met & married Elizabeth Robinson (daughter of Alexander Robinson & Margaret Cameron). Samuel & Elizabeth prepared to return to Scotland, but when Elizabeth saw the ocean at Charleston, she refused to go and they returned to Fairfield County SC. Two of their sons became Presbyterian preachers -- Alexander Robinson Banks & William Banks. They are buried at Concord Presbyterian Church, Woodward, Fairfield County, SC

Below is the home of John Marjoribanks (b.1743). It is in Thornhill, Scotland. I suspect this photo was taken about 1910, but perhaps as late as the 1950's. Mrs. Kim (Laura Mack) Hinceman gave me (James Green III) this print in April 1996 when I visited her home. Her grandfather Col. Francis Murray Mack Sr. gave me an identical print about 1973. Col. Mack's son Joe was a photographer and made many 5x7 prints of this photo. I suspect it was taken about 1910 because that was about the time when the descendants of Samuel here in Fairfield County received a letter from Misses Jeannie and Jessie Lowe of Forfar Scotland addressed to one of Samuel's daughters, Elizabeth. It was addressed to Elizabeth Marjoribanks. The family saw the letter listed among unclaimed letters published in the county newspaper and recognizing the surname and Elizabeth's name, picked up the letter. I (James Green) have never seen one of the letters between the Lowes and us nor even a quote from the letters.

Carse of McOrriston, Kilmadock Parish,
Perthshire, Scotland
Home of James Murdoch
whose daughter Helen married John Marjoribanks in 1769.
The photographer (Allen Long) says, the house & farm in the foreground are Carse of McOrriston which sits on this side of Goodie Water.  From looking at the topo map,  I think, the house (beyond Carse of McOrriston & across Goodie Water) in the green grass is North Mid Frew.   Beyond & to the left of that house is a house that might be Powback, but where is Myme?  Beyond that house should be the River Forth (not visible) & beyond that, on the side of the low ridge is the village of Kippen (not visible), but there should be more houses spread out futher across the flood plain, so the ridge seems too close.  Beyond the ridge is the big mountain that is surely Fintry Hills.  According to the map, the valley is less than 50 ft. above sea level & the top of Fintry Hills (called Stronend) is 1678 ft. above sea level.
