Subject: Samuel Banks Obituary
Dear James and Roger and Family Banks,

In an effort to gather together all facts and fables concerning the origins of Samuel Banks, I came across this and am copying pertinent info.

This account was attached in my files to a copy of letter written by A. R. Banks to his sister Mrs. Juliana Coleman. It is hand copied by James Green and ends:

J. Douglas From cousin Hattie Banks Mack's Bible.
(M.S.)
[I, Jas. Green say-M.S. stands for Marian Starnes. She wrote the copy which I copyed today, Aug. 21, 1971.]

Hattie Banks Mack is a daughter of she was a 1st cousin of Walter Francis Marion Coleman & Cicely Aline Coleman Broom.

"Obituary of Samuel Banks/

Died in Fairfield District, S.C. on the 16th Jan. ult. at the residence of his son Samuel, Samuel Banks, Esq. in the 88th year of his age.

The deceased was born in Scotland, near Thornhill, Sterlingshire. At an early age he united himself with the Presbyterian church; whose doctrines and order he loved and strictly adhered to, until his death. In 1790 he settled in London, where for a few years he was a regular attendant, and communicant at the "Scotts Church" London wall, then under the pastoral care of the Rev. Dr. Hunter. He removed to this country in 1793. The first Sabbath he spent in the state after leaving Charleston was at Catholic Church, Chester District, now under the pastoral care of his youngest son (the Rev. Wm. Banks), then a stranger among strangers, he felt no other tie or interest, in the place than that which draws together and unites the heart of christian with christian......."

James & all Sams,

I've just had the March issue of the Genealogists' Magazine (issued by the Society of Genealogists) which states that a book has recently been donated to their Library called "The Scots Kirk in London," by George G.Cameron. Interesting or what? Unfortunately there is a note to say that it is not available on loan until after the next issue of the magazine (in June), so we may have to possess our souls in patience for a while, though I hope to get a sight of it when I go to London in April. It's quite an old book apparently, published in 1979, but we should be able to confirm whether or not the "Scotts Kirk London Wall" is credible. Meanwhile, I must remind the Bank of England that they owe me a letter.

James, ... As to the 1979 date of publication, all I meant was that it had been kicking around for quite a long time; in fact, Harry tells me that it is in several major American libraries, as well as some English ones. I've asked him to post these to this site. ...
