I have always given my line as: me-> James Green Jr.>Mamie Roberts>Linnie Spence> b.1949 b.1914 b.1889 b.1857 Fereby Hargraves>Rhoda Carver>Sampson Carver> b.1838 b.1812 b.1755 William Carver(alias Braswell)>Ann Carver>Wm.Carver d.1767 I'd never heard of this Pennsylvania lineage. How did you decide to post to the Braswell List w/o knowing of William Carver being a bastard of Richard Braswell & Ann Carver? I guess that is the extra data that is contradictory (or as you call it, "confusing".) I fear I am not going to be much help. I did not do the research & have not back checked the lineage (i.e. I have not been to the archives of VA to verify the line & to see if I think this is the only possibility. Evidently it is not the only possibility since you give a PA line. A man named W.C.Fields who lives or lived in Fayetteville NC was my source 25 years ago. He said he was not expert, but it looked to him like my William Carver was a bastard, but there was no document to prove it. I supposed that some prideful relative long ago removed the proof from the court house feeling it was a shame that should be forgotten. This is my only ancestor that is thought to be a bastard so I find him rather interesting. His supposed father is even more interesting since he did some counterfeiting of coin. Wouldn't it be a treasure to have a coin counterfeited by an ancestor! I assume you descend from Jesse CARVER b.1786? Then who? I think Jesse CARVER b.1786 is Tom Atkinson's line. He's in the cc-line. Erica, I will add you to my group alias for Carver since you & those in the cc-line descend from Sampson Carver of south GA. -- James W. Erica, The url that Tom is talking about is my web page: http://emcee.com/~green/Bras.html then click on "3.Will of William CARVER (alias BRASWELL) " I just checked it with my browser & the document does not contain the string "Bras" nor "Brac", so there is no mention of Braswell land being bequeathed nor of his alias or Braswell kin. Not even a Braswell executor or witness! So this is not helpful in showing that this William was a bastard of the Braswells. Perhaps comparing what he is bequeathing to what Braswells had might shed light. I think he (Wm.) has a brother for whom there is more evidence for his being a bastard. I wonder if Ann Carver left a will that helps. William's will says: "Item. I give and Bequeath to my Son Samson Carver, Two negros viz. Bet and Jo and Five Cows and Calves five Sows and pigs, One feather Beds and furniture, Belonging Thereto, one Still, and the plantation and Land I Bought of Richard Dunn in Bladen County, and Two horses and Two Breading mairs, to him and his heirs and assigns for Ever". It seems to me, there are 2 directions to look. We need to find a deed where Samson sells the Dunn place & hope it matches the year he arrives in GA. It would be very nice if it says "Samson late of Bladen Co NC but now of Ware or Appling Co GA". Some deeds do that. That would obviously show that this NC Samson Carver was our Samson Carver. Locating the Dunn place & putting it on a map on the web would be wonderful. Going the other direction, we need to find where William got the other land he is giving. If inherited from his father or deeded for love & affection, I'd be very pleased. Since this will mentions neighbors bordering the bequeathed land, one could look up their land & see if Braswells or Carvers were neighbors -- a tough job. I see I have a typo: "Gillils". Wonder if that is Gillis & the same Gillis family that traded land with my gt. grands near the Coffee/Ware line. Those Gillises are wealthy & might have a genealogy. I should check my photocopy of the will & fix the spelling. If the kids are named in the will from oldest down & William followed the naming scheme, then William's dad should be Samson & not Richard. There is a Braswell genealogy book that shows Richard Braswell's mom was Sarah Sampson, but Nona Williams of Braswell-L says Sarah may have been born a Valentine rather than Sampson. I do not know if I have seen Richard Braswell's will. Now what are the documents for your version of the lineage? -- James W. But to answer your question, I do not have the documentation (photocopy of record (primary source)) on this subject. I joined SAR on one of my mom's ancestors back in the 1970s. Carver is on of my dad's ancestors. Now that our flag is under attack, I am more interested in joining SCV than supporting patriotism to the country that seems to be attacking my flag. I dropped out of SAR early from boredom. I got mom in DAR on the same ancestor & she stuck because she liked the ladies but their meeting agenda seemed boring. I do hope someone can substantiate some of Huxford's words such as the Rev. War record. It would make Huxford more believable (credible). -- James W. This lineage is more believable to me. My mistake was having William CARVER married to Mary WALMSLEY not Mary WILSON. The dates were similar as well as children's names. Here it the majority of what I sent to Tom. You will be able to see the rest of my lineage. I found a book entitled Geneology of William Carver from Hertfordshire,England in 1682 by Elias Carver. It was published in 1903. The brothers CARVER ( John, William, Jacob, & Joseph) came on the ship "Welcome" This is the passage of the book that was sent to me as follows: "William CARVER was born in England and came to Byberry, Philadelphia, PA.,in 1682. In the 11th month, 1689 (old style), he married atFriends' Meeting, Middletown Twp,Bucks Co.,PA.,Joan KINSEY, a descendent of Chief Justice KINSEY. This wife having died, he married at Falls Monthly Meeting, in 1723,Grace Carter,a widow, whose maiden name was PAXSON, fromBristol,England. By her he had but one child,Hannah. He died at Byberry,inMay,1736,and she in 1737. His will was proven,June 2,1736, and recorded inPhiladelphia in Will Book E,page 369; his widow's will in Will Book F,page 42,in 1737. His children are, as shown by his will: 1.Sarah Carver 2.RachelCarver 3. William CARVER b.3-22-1694; m. 10-28-1719, ElizabethWalmsley, daughter of Henry and Mary Searle, his wife; d. What I have may be wrong. In your letter of Oct. 15 you give the Wm. of PA as having a son "Sampsom (mine) b 1750? d. 1840"? I realize there would be no dates for the kids in the will. So where did the dates come from? Huxford's volumes? Looking in Vol.2 of Huxford I find the heading gives "1755- 1840" & in the article it says "born .. about 1755 ... died about 1838". One can guess the birth comes from the census brackets & perhaps age of eldest child. Death is from estate papers of which I have never gotten photocopies. Anyone who cares about their ancestry would get photocopies. So, I must not care or rather I find I have overlooked running down copies at Court House or archives. This Sampson would seem more real if I had his land lot/s marked on a map & on the web. I am very unhappy that he left us no tombstone. His daughter Rhoda has a fine stone at Oak Grove Holiness Ch., Bickley, Ware Co. (I think it is Ware, but if not then Coffee. 'Tis close to the line.) >I've only been searching afew months. And me only since about 1970. Time slips by & I get nothing done. Crackerland is too far. But I do not even get my work done here in SC. >This lineage is more believable to me. Why? Because NC is closer than PA? Good point. Huxford says Sampson was born in NC & says his father William lived in Cumberland Co. NC, but you can't trust Huxford. I wonder if any of Sampson's kids lived to 1880 to tell census where Sampson & wife were born. Have you been looking in primary records like the census & in court houses? There is where the believable info is to be had. Maybe we can put some primary records on the web relating to our Carvers. All my information came from a cousin, we haven't been back to Coffee so I can ascertain where his info came from. He didn't have a birthplace for William but a birthdate of 3-22-1694 (which seemed like a long time before birth of children). At the time I had nothing else to go on. I had the parents, Mary & William, being the Quaker CARVERS with PA info. and the children of the North Carolina CARVERS. I'll send you copies of some of the info. I need to get a scanner. Being in the Bible Belt for the last couple hundred years, I couldn't understand that my CARVER's had been Quaker and travelled all that way from PA. I've corresponded with some other CARVER's and all her folks had stayed in Bucks Co. PA. >My mistake was having William CARVER married to Mary >WALMSLEY not Mary WILSON. Wilson was merely W.C. Fields' wild guess. Don't keep the surname, unless you have the primary records to back it up. >The dates were similar as well as children's names. It's been too long for anyone to remember what is true & even too long for anyone to be left who loves the man we are defaming. Besides, (as Tom Atkinson was saying to me today in email), morals are shot today. Few care about what Clinton did because of what they have done in their own lives. So why would anyone care about what their ancestor has done that we are defaming. Richard was in more trouble than having 2 families. He counterfeited money. You spoke of believability. I find it hard to believe Richard is our ancestor. He is a grandson of Rev. Robt. Braswell but more unbelievable, how did his wife allow him to have so many kids by one woman -- Anne Carver! Why would he bother with Ann. I think he had kids by his wife. I heard some confusion on the Braswell-L a year or 2 ago about just who lay with Ann Carver. I think there were 2 Richards. >It is the same blood, just not the same name. Any >enlightenment? I wonder if some of the bastard brothers of William Carver kept the Braswell name. Note in Huxford vol.2 in Sampson Carver's article he has a son Sampson B. b.1805. This Sampson is thus a "Jr." except for his father lacking the middle initial B. Or, might this be the alias surname & might Sampson Sr. have considered it to be his own middle name?! Speculation like this ends up turning into facts, so I hope you won't repeat the speculation without emphasizing it is mere dreaming. Perhaps others have heard of the Braswell name among the kids of Sampson. I thought I remembered something but this is all I could see, looking in Huxford. Maybe Tom Atkinson said something or something was said on Braswell-L. Anyone got info? -- James W. BTW, if you like the GA flag I think you all should fly it at home, esp. if you live in GA & want your legislators to know you want to keep the state flag as it is. I see any change to be saying that my ancestors that fought for GA against the USA were wrong. That makes me fighting made to have my ancestors insulted like that! When NY said they were removing the GA flag from the collection of state flags flying in their state house, SC said for NY to remove SC's too. Then I started flying GA in the front yard here in SC under the excuse that dad & I were born in GA. The black ladies that work for us seem ok with GA & the 1st national flying in the front yard on 17' poles. I took the GA flag to the Hargraves reunion this year & flew it on a 17' pole in from of the church. I almost fell out with my Coleman Reunion here in SC this year when they initially told me I could not fly 1st & 3rd National at the reunion. He was conceived prior to their marriage and although he was entitled to go by the Carver name, for whatever reason he choose to go by his mother's maiden name. Some of his ten children choose to use Carver while others kept Ricketson - very confusing!! His daughter - Eliza Ricketson - was my great grandmother and married John Darling Jowers. Their daughter - Mattie Jowers - is my grandmother. Check out my home page at: http://familytreemaker.com/users/l/e/g/Karen-D-Leggett/index.html Oh - be careful of the Huxford info - I ran into a TON of problems with her information. There is a lot of info but some of it is word of mouth only and not verified, and other parts of it were put together by authors deduction only. Just make sure you verify everything you find in it with census records, birth and death certificates, land deeds and any other hard copy info you can find. In my search for my Sumner family, there were a lot of very similar names that cousins shared and the family was so large it's easy to get onto the wrong track - Huxford had them coming from a completely different county and upon looking them up in that county found no trace of them. Finally after looking in civil war rosters managaged to trace them back to the correct county - also info on who one Sumner married was completely incorrect, thus creating another huge ancestor problem. Just be careful and verify!! Here is another Carver cousin: Kim Gilliard - gilliard@alltel.net I haven't checked out your links yet - was eager to respond to your e-mail first! I'm going to go check them out now - I look forward to hearing from you again! Karen :)

I got more data on you there from the tree in the big box & added that data to the chart on my web page. The tree being alive (expanding while scrolling) made it a little tricky. I have seen others using FTW on the web. I noticed you stopped your pedigree in the big box with Eliza Ricketson. Why? What is your source for the dates you gave on your top web page for William Carver? >Oh - be careful of the Huxford info - I ran into a TON of >problems with her information. There is a lot of info but >some of it is word of mouth only and not verified, and other >parts of it were put together by authors deduction only. I agree that the Huxford volumes have lots of major errors. I found this with my Hargreaves. I suspect the source is as you say, family legend & deduced guesses. It makes me doubt everything in Huxford that I cannot verify. But finding time to go to court houses is a problem & some of his info may come from people with family Bibles. I wonder if one can find at the Huxford Soc. office Huxford's notes, sources, & correspondence on each article. >Just make sure you verify everything you find in it with >census records, birth and death certificates, land deeds >and any other hard copy info you can find. I can't find any mention of my Hargraves in Barnwell Co. >Finally after looking in civil war rosters managaged to trace >them back to the correct county - also info on who one >Sumner married was completely incorrect, thus creating >another huge ancestor problem. Yes, convincing folks that you are right & that they have believed wrong info for 30 years is hard. It gets to be like putting out a fire. I think Mary's name being Wilson is such a fire. I do not know Mary's maiden name. I just have no proof of Wilson. I think Wilson was W.C. Field's conjecture which I put on my pedigree with a ? & mailed with correspondence since 1976. I think people felt they needed an ancestor & did not need to worry about the question mark. But I may not be the only source and someone may have found proof. Genealogy is full of GIGO (Garbage In, Garbage Out). That is, when one inputs false info it is garbage & that is what you get out -- the same false info. The computer does not improve the info, just makes the garbage neat & easy to access & print in a variety of ways. :-( >Just be careful and verify!! > >Here is another Carver cousin: Kim Gilliard - gilliard@alltel.net I will write her immediately to see if she'll join us. >I haven't checked out your links yet - was eager to respond >to your e-mail first! I found 2 1st cousins on my Carver side (dad's side) have ICQ. I left both a message. No word yet from them. Join us via ICQ or AOL's AIM both are free & both have chat rooms. If you have AOL you do not have AIM unless you download it. It is for members & non-members of AOL. Tonight one of my genealogical contacts (almost cousin) on ICQ suggested I get QTalk (a utility of ICQ) so we could talk via mic & speakers. I did & it worked beautifully between me and him in FL. We are using the beta or evaluation software for free. The sound was good. This got me interested in sound so I made a sound file (.wav) of my voice & put it on one of my web pages (not Carver). It sounds clear. It makes the page load a little slow since it is 170K. Maybe I should take up singing on my web pages! :-) LOL You know, I could put up a page for my parents with some words from them. I need a port for my camcorder so I can add movies to my web pages. This morning I got dad an email address that he can check by dialing an 888 (toll free) number, and keying in his password & user name (JGreen2) using the number equivalents as shown on one's phone (i.e. 5473362). It will read him his email via a voice synthesizer. I tried it, mailing JGreen2... a letter from Juno & then dialing 888... & listening. Also anyone can leave a voice mail (recording) for a member such as JGreen2 & it is played back when dad calls in. I tried that too. Of course that was clear while the voice synthesizer was a little weird sounding. Dad hates it without trying it, so I have not given anyone the email address. Maybe some of your kin with no computer, might like it. There is no software to download. You register an account via the web. One might consider the registration process a drawback since it is for College students & you have to tell them your college, major, year of graduation, birth date. But, I am flexible & can provide info, but you all may have more scruples than me. It would be great to send group email to folks like the Mickelsons, Uncle John, & Aunt Lois at the same time as you all, via writing one email message just as I am doing now when I write just to you all. If any of you want the necessary info to do ICQ, QTalk, or email via telephone instead of computer, let me know. -- James W. Of course that has opened up a whole new puzzle to finish - joy!! I have a question - Did Richard Braswell and Ann Carver ever marry - does anybody know what their story was? The personals behind all of the various family members really interest me - it makes them more real. In my particular line (which descended thru William Carver>Sampson Carver>Jesse Carver>James Carver>Vincent Ricketson>Eliza Ricketson>Mattie Jowers>Nelma Jackson>ME!) Vincent's last name was actually Carver but he was born before they were actually married and for some reason choose to keep his mothers maiden name. His children either choose Carver or Ricketson - whichever they wanted. Interesting -and looks like something like this occurred previously! I'm curious to see what the story is - look forward to hearing from you soon. Thanks, Karen :) kdcl1@gate.net

Wayne Braswell's little blue hardback book, "The Braswell Family" c 1985. Well I phoned him tonight (local call) & he said he was sold out. I did give him the info (from the Braswell web page) on how to subscribe to the list & he may subscribe his Juno address. Since his Braswell's were from Anson Co NC, he & his book were not close kin to us. His ancestor Robt. Braswell b.1677 was a brother to our Richard Braswell who married Sarah Crocker & who also had our (& other) bastards by Ann Carver (so we think). His book on the Anson Co Braswells covered 2 of the gt. grandsons of this Robt. b.1677 namely Richard Braswell b.1755 & Sampson Braswell b.1757. I am encouraged in my belief in our Braswell descent by all Braswells carrying the given name Sampson & the Carvers carrying the given name Braswell. You may recall that our Richard Braswell (supposed father of our William Carver), was Richard Jr. Richard Jr.'s parents were Richard Braswell Sr. & Sarah Sampson. The surname (Sampson) of Sarah is not certain. One would assume that our Sampson Carver & Wm. Wayne Braswell's Sampson Braswell get their given name from that Sarah SAMPSON as do many other Braswells. The said author, Wm. Wayne Braswell b.1926 was a gt. gt.gt.gt. grandson of Sampson Braswell b.1757 whose father was another Richard Braswell Jr. b.1732 who was a 2nd cousin of our Sampson Carver b.c.1755, so our Sampson Carver & Wm. Wayne's Sampson Braswell b. 1757 are 2nd cousins once removed inspite of being supposed to be so close to the same age. "Karen" , it was good to see your post today to the Braswell-L. Let us hear any replies you get. You might want to send us (via "reply to all") your post that you sent to the list. -- James W.
