The Cop in Blue Jeans ("Squadra
Antiscippo") DIRECTED BY: Bruno Corbucci
REVIEWED: 06-06-97 Videodrome's favorite caveman, Tomas
Milian, plays cop Nico Giraldi in this Italian Serpico swipe directed by Bruno
Corbucci. Giraldi zips around town fighting crime on his little Enduro, but
finds himself foiled by a devious gang of thieves led by "The Baron," who runs
things from his hospital bed (but goes out now and then to steal stuff
or
slap women around). The Baron's boys are more-or-less a glorified bunch of
purse-snatchers until they make the mistake of stealing Jack Palance's
briefcase, which turns out to contain five million dollars. The mysterious
Palance goes berserk and begins slaughtering the Baron's boys left and right,
while Giraldi (who brazenly displays his Serpico posters in his apartment) does
his best to track both men down. While this ain't one of the best Spaghetti
Crime flicks I've ever seen, it does have some cool moments: in one goofy
scene, Giraldi meets his new girlfriend at a trendy nightclub, where he
proceeds to rough her up pimp-style in order to gain the trust of a gay
informant.
There's also an extended car chase towards
the end, with Giraldi on the trail of Palance, whom he later knees in the
balls. When Palance's assistant asks him if he's okay, he gasps "Laughing!"
Then the movie just sort of ends--but not before we get to see Giraldi's pet
mouse decked out in a Serpico hat. Pretty damn screwy, all in all. (Vidmark)

Guido & Maurizio DE ANGELIS - Music Hit Squad is the second film
in Bruno Corbucci's Nico Giraldi series, or Monnezza as the character is also
known as among the Italian audience. The story involves some burglars who
unintentionally steal some top secret documents from a villainous American
businessman played by Robert Webber. When the burglars try to blackmail Webber,
he retaliates with more force than they had reckoned with as he hires a
contract killer to get rid of them. Special cop Nico Giraldi (Milian) is on the
case however and he follows Webber
back to the states. If you've seen the
earlier The Cop in Blue Jeans the plot may sound familiar, it's actually almost
a straight remake. There's a big difference though, the budget which seems to
be much higher than for the first Giraldi film thus enabling Corbucci to
through in lots of more fun action and work with better looking sets. Whereas
the police station in The Cop in Blue Jeans looks like someone's cellar, here
it's a proper office. There's also much more humour in Hit Squad with the
especially significant introduction of the Bombolo character, a fat little guy
who worked selling tickets at a funfair before Corbucci hired him. Bombolo is
apparently something of a legend with Italian audiences, everytime he gets the
traditional slap in the face by Milian he makes a sound "like spitting on the
floor" that has to be heard to be believed. Sadly English dubbed versions loses
the distinctive sounds of Bombolo. Also notable is that Milian's character is
even more eccentric this time, with a magnificent seventies wardrobe that
changes with every new scene. Hit Squad is uneven but generally it's a very
entertaining Italian action comedy with some good motorcycle chases and a great
final segment in America featuring a hilarious Naked Gun style romance. Next in
the series was Swindle. |
"Swindle" Original Title:
SQUADRA ANTITRUFFA Director: Bruno CORBUCCI
Release Year: 1977 Production Company: Cinemaster Country: Italy Cast: Tomas
MILIAN - Nico Giraldi David HEMMINGS Massimo VANNI John DULANEY - also staring BOMBOLO (click for image)
Credits: Galliano JUSO - Producer Mario AMENDOLA - Screenplay and
original story Bruno CORBUCCI - Screenplay and original story Daniele ALABISO -
Editor Guido & Maurizio DE ANGELIS - Music The third entry in the
popular Nico Giraldi series, Swindle is routine "Monnezza" fare with enjoyably
vulgar and highly politically incorrect humour. The Roman slang dialogue is as
usual lost in an awful American dubbing, which however also gives the film an
even more "cheap" atmosphere. This time "undercover" inspector Nico Giraldi
(Milian) is investigating an insurance fraud with the help of an English
detective(David Hermmings) employed by "Loyd's of London" - the "most
prestigous insurance company in the world". The investigation leads the
unlikely team into the Gay underworld of Rome, which gave the filmmakers the
opportunity to incorporate some low-brow "gay-bashing" as the ridiculously
macho Giraldi visits a Gay club. In the second half of the film Milian and
Hemmings follows a suspect to San Francisco, one of the funnier segments which
of course has the obligatory car chase. As in the previous films, Giraldi has a
romantic interest in the form of a highly educated girl who is fascinated by
Giraldi's tongue-in-cheek brutishness. The girlfriend in Swindle claims to be a
feminist and studies film and complains when Giraldi wants to watch Spaghetti
Westerns... The plot of Swindle is a bit more complicated than in the previous
films and there's the new element of the sidekick played by David Hemmings.
Basically though it's the same old story and low-brow jokes that we know and
sometimes enjoy from Cop in Blue Jeans and especially Hit Squad. All films
share the idea of having witnesses and suspects being gradually assassinated as
Giraldi gets closer to solving the crime. Hit Squad and Swindle also share the
element of Giraldi going off for an entertaining visit to the states towards
the end of the movie. These two films have less than a year between them and
are actually quite similar and you can tell that they were shot by the same
team. The Giraldi character is still fun but a slight dissapointment this time
around as Milian has started wearing a curly long-hair wig (or ist real hair?!)
and does also feature less of the bizarre clothing. Although the great hats are
still there!

the " Tiberina Family ", a criminal association, runs amok and the district

although deprived of authority he gives his all to arrive at the truth. (from

A SHORT
REVIEWFrom: THIS
LINK
Plot Summary: A group of passengers
aboard a train are quarantined because of a deadly virus aboard. They are to
pay with their lives in order to stop the spread of the disease... Comments:
Excellent! Great cinematography, music, plot and special effects. Its
suspensful, occasionally illogical, and has fantastic characters. Disaster
lovers will love the ending. Quite lenghty though.

Click here for more Reviws such as: "In
spite of all of what I've said, The Cassandra Crossing is still fun to watch.
This movie should be considered as a suspense movie, not as mere another panic
movie which was flourishing in 1970s. "
A Review of the JERRY GOLDSMITH musical score: "The
Cassandra Crossing" - Jerry Goldsmith "The Cassandra Crossing" ranks among the
best of Goldsmith's orchestrations from the opening statement of the love theme
(showcasing a harpsichord, and handled with a sense of impending doom) to the
finale. The creepy metallic aura of the music is thrilling, the main theme a
psychological delight, and, again, here is one of the music effective uses of
unusual techniques in Jerry Goldsmith's career. The 'Helicopter Rescue' track
is a bone-crunching action sequence that guarantees this is at least worth the
cost of a listen. Rating: ****""
