The Mighty Thor
# 81- 85

The Mighty Thor # 81: "Ragnarok Part 2 "
Writer: Michael Avon Oeming/Daniel Berman
Artist: Andrea DiVito
Jay's Rating:
J1/2

Synopsis:
Thor returns to Asgard with Iron Man and Captain America and finds it and its people devastated. They take on Thor, Ulik, and Fenris and drive them off. Thor meets up with ragtag group of survivors and learns that Balder has fallen. Thor sends Iron Man and Captain America back to Earth and prepares for Ragnarok.

Jay's Notes:
- I'm still bothered by all the action we're missing. This story is being told in summary rather than showing us the action. For example, the death of Balder. Instead of showing Balder's last stand, we just get to see the results. Poor storytelling.
- Didn't really understand why Cap was hunting around for iron? Hello, Iron Man.
- Didn't really understand Thor's behavior in letting Fenris, Loki just flee especially considering how many people they've killed.
- Didn't really understand why Thor sent Cap and Iron Man back to Earth. I know why he says he did, but that didn't make much sense seeing as how helpful they were in helping him turn back Loki.

The Mighty Thor # 82: "Ragnarok Part 3 "
Writer: Michael Avon Oeming/Daniel Berman
Artist: Andrea DiVito
Jay's Rating:
J1/2

Synopsis:
Thor is reunited with a thin Volstagg who informs him that Fandral and Hogun are dead. The ragtag group of surviving Asgardians make their way to Vanaheim. They attack the hordes of trolls and Brunhilde the Valkyrie is one of the first to fall. Thor takes on Durok the Destroyer and calls down the thunder without Mjolnir. Beta Ray Bill joins the action and takes out Fenris.

Jay's Notes:
- Fandral and Hogun killed off-screen? That's just ridiculous.
- More summary action in that Thor has defeated Geirrodur in some climatic battle which is summarized in one panel. I want more! Vidar and Kurse are also killed but their deaths are also summarized in one panel.

The Mighty Thor # 83: "Ragnarok Part 4"
Writer: Michael Avon Oeming/Daniel Berman
Artist: Andrea DiVito
Jay's Rating:
JJ

Synopsis:
Beta Ray Bill fells Fenris and turns back the remnants of his army. Sif is apparently still alive thanks to Brunnhilde the Valkyrie. Thor leaves what's left of the Asgardians in Bill's care and takes refuge in Hildstalf, his father's seat. There, he's confronted by the Odinpower and taken to Mimir's Well at the foot of Yggdrasil. He tears out both of his eyes to fill the well anew. Afterwords, the Odinpower announces that Thor must be reborn.

Jay's Notes:
- Beta Ray Bill attended Odin's funeral, so there's a goof as to Bill not clueing into the fact that Thor is now Lord of
Asgard.

The Mighty Thor # 84: "Ragnarok Part 5"
Writer: Michael Avon Oeming/Daniel Berman
Artist: Andrea DiVito
Jay's Rating:
JJJ

Synopsis:
Thor hangs from Yggdrasil and gains the knowledge of rune magic. However, he refuses to simply play part of the never-ending cycle of Ragnarok. He confronts Those Who Sit Above In Shadow who have apparently been manipulating the lives of Asgardians and vows to end their influence. He returns to Asgard and defeats Mangog with his newly acquired rune magic. He then turns his powers on his brother Loki and tears his head off his shoulders. Thor then vows to bring Ragnarok to an end by his own hand.

Jay's Notes:
- This is the first issue of this run that I've actually enjoyed. I think because it's actually showing the story happen,  rather than the earlier issues which just seemed to recap the action.

The Mighty Thor # 85: "Ragnarok Part 6"
Writer: Michael Avon Oeming/Daniel Berman
Artist: Andrea DiVito
Jay's Rating:
JJJ

Synopsis:
Thor confronts Surtur and demands that Surtur restore his hammer, Mjolnir. In exchange for this favour, Thor opens a path for Surtur and his minions to lay waste to Vanaheim and Valhalla. Thor plucks Beta Ray Bill from the carnage and sends him home. As Ragnarok closes, Thor visits the Norns and destroys their weave which was being used by Those Who Sit Above In Shadow to draw their powers from the endless Ragnarok cycle. In the aftermath, Thor closes his eyes and takes a bit of a rest.

Jay's Notes:
- Not a bad wrap-up, but it doesn't lift this story arc higher in my esteem.
- Let the speculation begin as to when Marvel will launch a new Thor series.
