Dundee United has a long exstensive history you can imagine. Dundee United were formed in 1909 after the old name of Dundee Hibernian was scrapped because of obvious Irish links. The club founder was Pat Reilly and he formed the club way back then. The reason for the appearance of United back in those days was because there was only 1 team in Dundee at this time and that team was Dundee FC. The Dundee Harp went extinct and the city cryed out for a new team in Dundee. Dundee United were mainly involved in lower Division football up until the late 50's and early 60's. At this time the club was in the Premier division under the management of Jerry Kerr. He created a good team and a team that could win the league but was not to be. Dundee United's main fame and fortune took place in the mid 70's and 80's under the management of Jim McLean. McLean created the best ever United squad in its history. McLean created Scottish stars like John Clarke, Billy Kirkwood, Kevin Gallacher, Eamon Bannon, Hamish McAlpine, Paul Hegarty, Paul Sturrock, Davie Dodds and Maurice Malpas. This team won the league in 1984 for the first time and was to be the last time the club did so. This team also did brilliantly in Europe getting to the Uefa Cup Final and defeating the greats like Barcelona, Manchester United and Monaco. The club reached the final but lost to IFK Gothenburg. After McLean left the club in 1993 he handed his position as manager to ex- Southampton midfielder Ivan Golak. Golak also brought in a good squad with the likes of Freedi Van Der Hoor who was bought by McLean and Craig Brewster. He also had a team that consisted of foreign talent. These players were Jerren Nixon, Gordon Petric and Siieb Dijkstra. Andy McLaren, Alex Cleland, David Hannah and Dave Bowman also took part in Golaks era. Golak won the Scottish Cup in 1994 but relegated the team the following season. For a more exstensive and detailed story of the clubs history click the link below.
