Central meeting @ Cal Poly Pomona 1/16/04

I.                    Intro

Chapters present: Cal Poly., Mt.SAC, El Monte High School.

Meeting called to order @6:50 P.M.

a.       Approval of agenda- Cal Poly motions to approve minutes, Mt.SAC 2nds

b.      Approval of minutes- Cal Poly motions to approve minutes, Mt.SAC 2nds

Correction to last week’s minutes: financial report should read: wondered if Wal Mart is donating $, not the other way around.

 

II.                 Officer Reports

Internal- announced the Arizona conference and the 1 million student march which will be discussed in greater detail under new business.

 

Communications- reported central website was completed over the break. Discussed possibly moving files from free server to Cal Poly’s server.

 

Financial-We have $596.46 currently in account, will try to schedule TV tapings for Mon&Weds. since officers are busy T&Thurs. Mt.SAC will try carne asada sales also on these days and needs help from other chapters. In response to internal’s question about mad cow fears, discussion followed about also selling chicken as a substitute. Discussion of funds not yet received ensued. Central resolved to give Monica from Rio Hondo 6 months to come up with funds owed.

 

External- no report, except to continue efforts recruiting more schools into the Central.  

 

III.               Old business

·        Cal MeCac- What’s the status of the program? Cal Poly talked to V.P. of Academic Affairs at their campus and discussed setting up an advisory board and were asked to set up a pilot program by the administration. Feedback from other chapters sought, Mt.SAC has not gone through it but Jose Sandoval formerly of Rio will try to build up support for it through “Causa” at that campus. Resolved to work further on this issue and to get rosters from each campus so letters may be mailed out.

·        Cal Pulli- $500 dollars still needed for possible rental of El Monte property. A flyer has been created to promote the program. Resolved- each campus will turn in a list of possible instructors and their schedules by next meeting.

·        Dec.12 boycott- Reaction to action was mixed but a consensus was not reached over whether to have further walkouts in the near future.

·        Shakey’s night- will pursue the funds

·        Yahoo/member applications- communications will create a generic application for approval @ next central.

·        Advisor’s dinner- tabled until after U.Y.A. conference.

 

IV.              New Business

·        Arizona conference- Feb. 7th 2 day conference in Tucson regarding the border issues. Collective organizations are hosting it. Saturday after next Central. Transportation will be provided for those wanting to attend.

·        1 million student mobilization-A proposed coordinated mobilization of students fighting for amnesty throughout California. Further discussion on this issue will take place in the future.

·        Regional issues- Discussion over whether central should pull out of the region. After much discussion, the Central resolved to go united into regionals on Sunday and present their concerns and to read up on constitutions and the plans prior to doing so.

·        Non-profit discussion- Discussions ensued on whether to seek non-profit status for the central so that we may apply for future grants. Motion to do this passed by consensus.

·        U.Y.A. Conference- Coming up Feb. 20th. The first planning meeting will be Tuesday Jan. 20 11:45-12:45 @ the Chavez Center @ Cal Poly.

      

V.                 Chapter Reports

Mt SAC- Will have an identities and labels workshops to counter a racist film being shown on campus. We will have carne asadas on Mon.&Wed. and we had our xmas dinner over the break. Chapter working on getting new officers and recruiting new members. Also planning a workshop on Taco Bell.

Cal Poly-none.

El Monte High- voted for new officers. Had a big turnout for Dec. 12 walkout on SB60.
