There was discussion over a Cal Poly member not being aware of all the details of the position paper prior to signing it.

A motion was passed to reintroduce the position paper to the region by Mt. SAC and was seconded by E. Monte High School. A copy will be presented to the region at the meeting at U.C.I. on Sunday 11/9/03.

Pedro from Cal Poly informed us that the grant for the community center was denied. There is no appeals process. The original plan for each school to fundraise $2K may be revisited.

Discussion regarding options to incorporate MeCha or to seek a non-profit status ensued. Pedro told us that there are more grants available but that they are highly competitive. Other organizations like H.I.P. Hispanics in Philanthropy and other non-profits are doing it.

Cal Poly is planning to set up a literacy program so that MeCha can have name recognition in the community. The community needs to recognize MeCha as a good thing. Expanding education is one of our primary goals. To this end a literacy for parents program and a space where to hold it will be sought prior to January.

Mt SAC continues to set up a tutoring program on their campus. Hector from Mt. SAC reminded us that Fabian Jimenez, former MeCha co-chair at Mt SAC along with the entire chapter were very successful in setting up orientations for incoming freshmen last year. E.O.P.S. will provide MeCha with their database and methods to track students.  Hector requested a meeting with the Cal Poly Mesa to talk about this further.

A motion was passed by Mt SAC. to put into practice CalMeca’s orientation for incoming high school students. Cal Poly seconds.

A motion was made by Mt. SAC to make Ariel Carmona Jr. the new communications for the Central. El Monte seconds.

There will be a carne asada sale on Dec. 4th. From 12-3 PM. During finals week at Mt SAC. Set up will begin at 11 AM. There will be food after the event. Some members of Rio Hondo volunteered to help. Donations are also sought. Yadira Tuxqoi asked for help for this event.

The Zapatista play Central event is being planned for Feb.12. Mt SAC will provide the theater and donations are sought. Hot chocolate, books and other sales can take place.  Vendors are encouraged. The event would be from 12-6. Mt. SAC motioned to carry out the event on this date and Cal Poly seconds.

The Central TV taping is scheduled for Nov. 25th (Tuesday) “Less than Perfect” @ 2 P.M. Some transportation will be provided by Jose Sandoval. The event is at CBS studios.

There was discussion about opening up the Central yahoo group to general members not just the Mesa members.

There is a toy drive going on at Mt.SAC until Dec. 10th and the toys will go to the immigrant worker’s kids. Veronica from Mt. SAC asked for donations for this.
