3rd July 2003 Dear Everton Residents,
The purpose of this message is to say a big 'THANK YOU', on behalf of the Bedfordshire bird watching fraternity, for having to endure such a major invasion of your privacy, over the past weeks.
As most of you will know by now, this 'Invasion' was caused by the surprise appearance in your village, of a 'SERIN'. This relatively small finch is fairly widespread in western Continental Europe but only puts in an appearance on rare occasions in the UK. Bedfordshire, officially, has only one previous Serin record, unfortunately, the victim of someone's pet cat! The occurrence in Everton is therefore, very special and it is not surprising that it has also attracted the attention of bird watchers from many other parts of the country.
Unfortunately, the 'Everton Serin' spent much of its time, submerged in dense foliage and can be very difficult to observe. Whilst bird watchers are, generally, a well behaved and respectful group of people, sometimes the odd person can over step the mark in his, or her, anxiety to get a view of the bird they desperately want to add to their life or county list. In case anyone did cause you inconvenience, please accept our sincere apologies. The good news is that most bird watchers have seen the bird by now so you can expect much less intrusion in future.
Once again, very many thanks for your tolerance and patience.
Yours sincerely,
Sonnie Wing
