STORY:
The war has raged beyond all living memory. All records that might have explained its causes have long succumbed to air raids, artillery damage, terrorism, and looting. Desolation covers entire continents, and what life remains is mainly mutated beyond recognition by the effects of biochemical and nuclear warfare. Most of these pathetic remnants scavenge in the wilderness, brutally competing with each other for the meagre resources left. Perhaps the only thing to be grateful for is that nearly all the devastating weapons of past times have long since been used up. However...
The Empire of Dis was once the greatest, and most ruthless of the global superpowers. Now nought remains but a scattered remnant of sad, insane mutants, bio-weapons, and rogue cyborgs, committed to whatever destruction they can achieve at all costs. To this end, they have sabotaged the coolant system and shutdown controls for the nuclear reactor in the ruins of their capital city. When it turns critical, the prevailing winds will carry the lethal radioactive fall-out right into...
...the Remnant of Lethe: a recently organised alliance of ex-slaves, mutants and outcasts who have settled one of the few regions still barely fertile and more or less uncontaminated. Many penitents have joined this unheard-of experiment in peace and tolerance, including Piccarda: an elite bio-weapon designed by the Empire of Dis, trained as a combat engineer. She fought many years for their "cause", until a nuclear strike upon the heart of the Empire destroyed the bureau of records, and she stumbled across the singed but legible files concerning her own manufacture. Having been told by her commanders that her natural parents had been tortured to death in an enemy prison camp, to discover that they had - in fact - died under the hands of the Empire's military scientists was enough to shock her out of her indoctrinated loyalty. She and many like her have taken refuge with the people of Lethe, hoping eventually to put these sorry times behind them.
However, this cannot be achieved if the Empire carries out its final plan. Therefore Piccarda, as the most skilled engineer among the folk of Lethe, has volunteered to shut down the reactor before disaster occurs, and to cope with whatever opposition the remnant of the Empire throws her way...
