We paraphrase:

Read the legend of J. A. Slade:
At twenty six years of age he killed a man and left the state. He joined an emigrant train as train master, shot a man, escaped, and became a slayer of Indians. He became an agent for the overland stage line, killed 26 men (outlaws,) and was finally caught by vigilantes in Montana, and hanged.
Indian attack:
One family in their little hut at night when Indians began trying to break in as they stood against the door, he with his gun, and she with a butcher knife. At dawn the Indians dispersed, and husband and wife were more dead than alive from fear and fatigue!
