What's up with The West Wing's token conservative, Ainsley Hayes (Emily Proctor)? Always a problematic character, the associate White House counsel was reintroduced last month in scenes that made her look like a blithering idiot. She humiliated herself twice in front of a bemused president (Martin Sheen), who found her dancing in a bathrobe in her basement office and later hiding in a closet that she mistook for a bathroom. As comic relief in tense episodes, the moments were funny, but also patronizing and rather insulting. I thought she was brought up for rhetorical balance, not for unbalanced cheap laughs.
