Known as Cosmo in Japan, the RX5 name denoted the rotary powered cars, with 121 being used for the reciprocating piston models.

This car's body colour bumpers and grille were not authentic (but look pretty good). Front design was considered to be Buick or Oldsmobile like but was attractive enough and distinctive amongst Japanese cars.

Only the door and middle windows retracted; perhaps this can be considered less of a hardtop due to the fixed pillars but I've have included it here anyway.

I believe this car shared the RX4/Luce platform but most if not all exterior panels were different. It was the essential replacement for the 1st generation coupes, as the 2nd generation had only sedans and wagons.

A relatively clean rear design (this car is probably missing badges but they were not likely all that big).

The notchback design came a little while after the fastback and pandered to US tastes (but was popular here too) with it's opera style windows and half vinyl roof.

Tailights too were rather more conventional looking too.
