The Flower cards

Hanafuda are a set of Japanese playing cards. They are often referred to as 'Flower cards', because each suit is depicted by a different flower. Each flower is representative of a calendar month around the time it comes into bloom. Indeed, the cards depict the yearly cycle using Japanese imagery. In addition to flowers the cards depict animals, birds, insects, a person and objects like prayer banners and a sake cup.

The cards are very colourful and can be interpreted in many different ways - only adding to their magic and mystique. These cards have been locked away from the western world for what seems like an eternity... it is time... for the beauty of the flower cards to be shared worldwide.

Well after a bit of a delay, here is the first official release of my FREEWARE Hana-fuda card game. Some of you may wonder why it has been released as version 1.2? Well, v1.0 was unsuitable for mainstream distribution and v1.1 had a computer player that was terrible - so revamped and with an AI that is fair v1.2 should deliver an enjoyable, playable game. This variant is a simplified combination of two other games I saw. I hope it ease the player gently into the world of the flower cards. When they feel confident they can move on to the more serious versions of the game.

'A-lo-ha! This is a great program you've developed! I downloaded it and used it to teach my 7-year-old niece how to play Hanafuda. She loves it, and is now playing it on her computer so that she can work on beating me at the real Hanafuda card game. Much thanks!' - Victoria Generao

'I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your game! I played a computer version of this many years ago, a DOS version called "Minhato", and became addicted. I always wished there was a Windows version. Now I've found it....thank you VERY much!!' - JoAnn Whitaker

'More years ago than I care to think about, a lovely Japanese co-worker taught me to play Hana-futa. (She was fasciated by the fact that I had studied Japanese in college.) I no longer work with her, and have not had anyone to play the game with for a very long time. Then, my sister found your site and downloaded it for me. It's wonderful! I was plesantly surprized to find out how much I remembered. Now I play it almost every evening. It's much more fun than the solitaire games played with the 52-card deck, and the cards are so much prettier.' - Marsha S Francis
