UK- Cops may be moonlighting on dramas such as Bad Girls!:

Claims that Metropolitan Police officers are moonlighting as extras on The Bill and Bad Girls are being investigated by Scotland Yard.

Rates of up to 120 pounds a day plus overtime make the work more rewarding than a constable's daily pay.

The investigation is believed to centre on an extras agency which has been set up by the wife of a member of the diplomatic protection group. It follows a complaint received last week.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "Officers can pursue outside employment, including acting work, if they've gained permission."

It's reported that two Met officers have been caught working without permission on ITV's police series The Bill and EastEnders but neither lost their jobs.

The makers of The Bill have admitted using police and ex-cops as extras on nearly 30 episodes a year.

They often work as armed response officers or riot police.

A Bill spokeswoman said: "We assume that everyone who comes to work for us has the permission of their employers."

An EastEnders spokesman said the BBC1 soap had never used extras supplied by the agency now under investigation.

The makers of ITV's jail drama Bad Girls say they have used extras supplied by the agency.

A spokeswoman said: "We've only used the agency once, which isn't a huge number, for riot scenes.

"We've hired professionals in good faith via specialised agencies and therefore presume that their TV work doesn't interfere with their day job. Filming was scheduled to take place during professionals' free time."

The actors' union Equity will also investigate the moonlighting claims.

An Equity spokeswoman said: "We'll be talking to the shows which have been named including The Bill, Bad Girls and London's Burning. Equity's head of film, TV and radio is aware of the situation."

Any inquiry is likely to deal with the use of non-actors when so many Equity members are out of work.
