Herkingen is an old village at the Grevelingen Lake and only 50 km to the south of the city of Rotterdam. The Grevelingen Lake used to be connected to the North Sea, but after the great flooding of 1953 a great dam was built to protect the area from the sea. The lake is shallow and boast with several islands. Herkingen is a great place for swimming and relaxation. The water of Grevelingen Lake is still rather salty, so for those who prefer freshwater there are two pools in the resort. Other sport that can be enjoyed at Herkingen include: tennis, table-tennis, cykling, sailing, windsurfing and walking. In the nearby town of Melissant there is a golf club and at 15 minutes drive is the North Sea with long sand beaches. |
