Reviews (March 2003).

Here is the page which attempts to identify those films and videos of special interest to Gun Moll fans. Yes it is down to hard numbers to try and quantify the quality of a film and though I am never going to agree with everyone else's opinions I hope my views give you some idea of a film's entertainment value.

'The Ticket '. There are films so mundane that you find it hard to say anything about them. They are competently put together and directed, the acting is fine but at the end of it you just think 'so what'. This film is a perfect example. Set in a snowbound area of the USA, CeeCee (Shannon Doherty) and Keith (James Marshall) are husband and wife who think their lives are going to change after winning a lottery. Well it does but not in the manner they are expecting. For scheming Rita (Heidi Swedberg) and Gerald are determined to steal the winning ticket and claim the money for themselves.

What follows is essentially a chase movie though set rather picturesquely on snowy mountain peaks. It soon becomes obvious that Rita is the driving force behind the get rich quick scheme. The film finally finishes with a bang when CeeCee blows up the dastardly Rita who is holding her family to ransom. Film rating 4/10 and Femme Fatale rating 3/10.

Codename Phoenix. This is a futuristic thriller. Jeffrey Meek plays a bounty hunter who becomes the prey after being falsely accused of a crime. He is aided in his evasion by his fellow bounty hunters by Luch Chang (Jeanne Chinn)  who plays some kind of Chinese super agent. They soon find themselves in pursuit of Aurora (Christina Cox) who owns a beauty parlour which fronts a criminal enterprise and her next big deal involves a deadly virus. However with her team of glamourous accomplices, another bunch of mad criminals and his ex-comrades on their trail things do not look good for Meek and Chinn.

Well, as is usually the case, good triumphs over evil and Aurora and her henchwomen are brought to book. All in all this is a mildly entertaining piece of nonsense which stretches credularity a bit too much as regards to Chinn's superhuman abilities. Another major flaw as regards to FF film is the underuse of the chief villainess and her merry band of molls. If I'd have been directing I think I'd have given them a bit more airtime. Film Rating 4/10 and Gun Moll rating 3/10.

No Contest. Shannon Tweed is best known for her roles in the 'erotic thriller' genre which enjoyed its heyday in the mid 1990s following the success of mainstream Hollywood efforts such as 'Basic Instinct' and 'Body of Evidence'. This film marked her move away from soft core film actress to action heroine and unfortunately she doesn't quite pull it off (the transition that is). We are in 'Die Hard' territory here as a bunch of crazed criminals hold a building hostage for some reason or another. Shannon Tweed is minder to a group of beauty pageant entrants and it is up to her to rescue the hostages and defeat the criminal mastermind who has backing from unlikely sources. I can assure you that Shannon is no Bruce Willis (thank goodness I hear you say) and try as she might she can't rescue this film never mind rescue an entire building. I'll put down this failure to the writer and director so Film rating gets a generous 4/10 and Femme Rating 5/10.
