In order to tune, many beginners opt to go with an electronic tuner which displays the pitch of the guitar string and indicates whether the string needs to be tuned up or down. If you choose to tune manually, you will first need to get the low E string tuned properly. To do this you may use a piano, tuning fork, tuning pipe, or some other means of finding the correct pitch. Next, to find tune the A string you will fret the low E string at the 5th fret and play this in unison with the A string: e--------- B--------- G--------- D--------- A---0----- E---5----- Do this until the A string sounds identical to the E string.(Note: always tune up to the note instead of down. If you tune too far up, go below the correct pitch and start again.) Next, to tune the D string, do the same: e---------- B---------- G---------- D---0------ A---5------ E---------- To tune the G string you'll do the same: e---------- B---------- G---0------ D---5------ A---------- E---------- Now, to tune the B string, instead of using the 5th fret, you'll use the 4th fret: e--------- B---0----- G---4----- D--------- A--------- E--------- For the high e string you'll once again be using the 5th fret: e----0----- B----5----- G---------- D---------- A---------- E---------- That's all there is to tuning your guitar.
