This Months Lesson / Fingertapping the 7 modes In the previous scales and theory lesson, I had shown you the 7 modes of C major scale, which in order went Ionian, Dorian , Phyrgian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian. We had learned that Aeolian was the minor relative scale, which produced harmony to C major. If you were to play the 7 modes of C major, in the A minor position you would begin in this order. Aeolian, Locrian, Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian. This fingertapping exercise of the 7 modes, is one of which I have created and use to play my solo performance at live gigs.It is very easy to understand and follow. Let's begin, one step at a time. Begin by tapping in descending order, Aeolian. In this first frame, we will tap the note A, pulling off to the notes G, F, E.The letter "t" idicates to use your index (or middle) finger to tap the note , to produce the sound of the note , rather than picking it. t p p p e :------------------------------------------------------ B :--------10---8--6--5---------------------------------- G :------------------------------------------------------ D :------------------------------------------------------ A :------------------------------------------------------ E :------------------------------------------------------ Notes A G F E Notice the connection. We began tapping with the note A, ending with the note E. This basically began a descending order of descending Aeolian, stopping on the note E(Phrygian). This now gives us the option to continue descending on the next string ( g string) with the note E ( Phrygian). Lets begin begin by tapping the note E, followed by pulling off to the notes descending D, C, B, in thus, ending in the note B, will give the option to continue with the B Locrian mode descend. t p p p e :------------------------------------------------------ B :------------------------------------------------------ G :-------9---7---5--4----------------------------------- D :------------------------------------------------------ A :------------------------------------------------------ E :------------------------------------------------------ Notes E D C B Next we will move again accordingly, by picking up where we left off, by beginning to tap B (for Locrian), followed by descending the notes A, G, F, E, once again ending in E Phrygian. t p p p p e :------------------------------------------------------ B :------------------------------------------------------ G :------------------------------------------------------ D :------9---7---5---3------2---------------------------- A :------------------------------------------------------ E :------------------------------------------------------ Notes B A G F E Next We will begin by tapping the note A, descending to the notes G, F, E, ending again with E Phyrgian. t p p p e :------------------------------------------------------ B :------------------------------------------------------ G :------------------------------------------------------ D :------7---5---3--2------------------------------------ A :------------------------------------------------------ E :------------------------------------------------------ Notes A G F E Next We will now once again pick where we left off, by beginning to tap the note E , desceding with pull-offs to the notes D, C, B (ending with B note, B locrian) t p p p e :------------------------------------------------------ B :------------------------------------------------------ G :------------------------------------------------------ D :------------------------------------------------------ A :----7----5---3---2------------------------------------ E :------------------------------------------------------ Notes E D C B Before drawing a conclusion to end this series of fingertapping the 7 modes of C major, in the A minor position, there are several methods of utilizing what you have thus learned so far. Suggestions Try repeating each of the above exercises, several times, until you feel comfortable, changing to the next string, to perform the next exercise. Once you have practiced these exercises slowly, then begin to work on increasing speed. Then you can choose how many times each you wish to play each exercise to create your guitar solo. Lets move on to a flash ending. Ending Ideas Many of the guitars I play when performing live , have whammy bar systems. So, I choose to end my solo with a whammy bar dive, by pulling off to the open A string.Let's move on. t p p p p e :------------------------------------------------------ B :------------------------------------------------------ G :------------------------------------------------------ D :------------------------------------------------------ A :-----7---5--3---2-------0----------------------------- E :------------------------------------------------------ Notes E D C B A In Conclusion There are many ways you can put a nice ending touch to this fingertapping solo peice. Besides a whammy bar, you could choose to add some pick scrapes, or pick slides, ending with A fifth (powerchord). Or you could use a delay pedal, to produce several echos. The ideas are pretty much unlimited. So, practice slowly, build speed as you go, and have fun!
