Bar chords(sometimes "Barre Chords") The name comes from the fact that we BAR all (or at least some) of the strings, usually with our index finger. They, like power chords, are a form of MOVEABLE chords. Also like power chords, the name of the chord changes as you change fret position and string sets. Root 6 A Major Root 6 Bar Chord on the 1st fret would look like this in tab: E--1--| b--1--| g--2--| d--3--| a--3--| e--1--| Using your first finger bar all the strings. Use your second finger on the G string and your ring and pinkie finger for the D and A strings. It might be a little uncomfortable at first and it might be hard to get all the strings to ring clear but as your hand strength builds it should get easier. A Minor Root 6 Bar Chord on the first fret would look like this: E--1---| b--1---| g--1---| d--3---| a--3---| e--1---| Basically you are doing the same thing as you were for the Major Root 6 Bar Chord except you just remove your second finger from the G string. A Major Root 5 Bar Chord on the first fret would look like this: E--1---| b--3---| g--3---| d--3---| a--1---| e--x---| This one can be done two ways. The hard way is to bar the notes on the first fret with your first finger and bar the notes on the third fret with your third finger. Or you can bar the notes on the first fret with your first finger and use your middle, ring, and pinkie fingers for the notes on the third fret. A Minor Root 5 Bar Chord on the first fret would look like this: E--1---| b--2---| g--3---| d--3---| a--1---| e--x---| To do this one use your first finger(as usual) to bar the notes on the first fret. Then use your second finger for the note on the B string and your third and fourth fingers for the notes on the G and D strings. Now remember all these chords stay in the same finger position as you move up and down the neck.
