Charlie Right    ZX Spectrum Three Channel Tunes    Charlie Left

The Briefing

Here we have all the three channel tunes. Many companies were now developing their own music routines and a lot of variation in sounds and techniques began to hit the market, much more so than with 2 channel tunes.

Odin

These tunes came from the Odin Computer Graphics team

ARC OF YESOD
The second outing for Odin's hero Charlie Fotheringham Grunes came with this funky little tune. link button
ROBIN OF THE WOOD
One of my personal favourite Spectrum tunes. The delicate lead sound and celtic drums really suited the style of the tune. Shame the game was a but dull! link button

Codemasters

Codemasters developed a cool 3 channel routine and drafted in popular C64 musician David Whittaker to write the tunes.

DIZZY
First game featuring the character Dizzy who went on to become one of the most successful computer characters ever, spawning numerous sequels over many computer formats. When can we expect him to come out of retirement for the Playstation 2, X-Box and Gamecube? link button
GHOST HUNTERS
Came complete with exciting sampled speech to psyche you up at the start of the game. link button
GRAND PRIX SIM
Another game incorporating sampled speech at the start. link button
PRO SKI SIM
My favourite of the Codemaster genre. A fast upbeat drum fest. Would probably go down well in an underground night club. Well maybe. link button
SUPER G-MAN
Quite a hard hitting tune for this scrolling shoot-em-up. link button
SUPER ROBIN HOOD
Not to be confused with Robin Of The Wood! link button

Others

Other Software House wrote some 3 channel rountines often which were used in only one game. Here's a sample.

BLOOD BROTHERS
Gremlin Graphics 2 player explorathon has quite a complex little bassline. Try playing this on your guitar at home. link button
FIREFLY
This game from Ocean came with 2 thumping little tunes on it's title screen. link button

TIM FOLLIN YOUR SINCLAIR DEMO
You had to type machine code into your Spectrum to get a chance to hear this tune written by Tim Follin for the popular computer magazine. link button
SAVAGE
Probably the most accomplished of the 3 channel routines. Firebird really went to town on this game which was spread over 4 loads from tape, each load with it's own tune, most of which were over 3 minutes long. There's quite a lot of different effects employed in these tunes giving it a much fuller range than the others on this page. link button

TRANTOR
Another game with a massive sprite and excellent music from Go! link button
TRANSMUTER
A short piece of music for this Code masters shoot-em-up. Quite an interesting style, rather like a C64 SID chip work. Such a shame it wasn't a bit longer! link button
VECTRON
Rather strange music based on the rather strange music from Tron. Lot's of different synthy effects are employed here to make up for the lack of a decent tune. An early work by Tim Follin for Firebird. link button
