Dizzy    ZX Spectrum One Channel Tunes    Dizzy

The Briefing

Here we have all the one channel tunes. Quite a few use the Sinclair in built beep routine but others invented there own buzzier code for funkier noises. This is how it was for the first few years of the Spectrums music output. T'was a dark period in Spectrum sound when us proud Speccy owners where under constant ridicule from Commodre 64 owners with their cooler sounding SID chip. But, hardy souls that we were, we believed in our humble machine and that the day would dawn when the Commode owners would be eating their words. We already had the better programmed games with less bugs and shorter loading time. We knew our time would come.

The Beepers

These tunes all used the standard in-built beep routine supplied in the Spectrum Rom. Well I assume so anyway, I don't know for certain because I didn't write the code so if any of the original programmers want to correct me then e-mail me the details.

PSSST
Ultimate was probably the most important software house producing games for the Spectrum, although they were never masters of music programming their games did push the boundaries and lead the industry. This short ditty from their first game greeted you if you completed all the screens. link button
COOKIE
Another short one from Ultimates next release. Not stunning, but bound to bring a nostalgic tear to the eye of anyone who remembers it. link button
JET SET WILLY
Software Projects struck gold with this, probably the most popular Spectrum game ever. The standard by which all other platform games were measured. link button
SABREWULF
Ultimate really started something with this game and lead the way with multi-screen maze games. The title tune was ripped off from the world of classical music. link button

Ultimate cemented their reputation as the industries most innovative company with this ground breaking isometric 3D game. link button
ALIEN 8
The next isometric 3D game, left Ultimate cartoon hero, Sabreman, behind and went into space. link button

A very lively piece of Mozart accompanied this platformers title screen and the game was also filled with charming little jingles while you played. link button

The Buzzers

These games wrote their own sound routines to create some different sounds for their music.

BRIAN BLOODAXE
Inspired by Monty Python this surreal platformer from The Edge also ripped off it's theme tune. link button
BRUCE LEE
A funky little number greeted you on loading up this digital tribute to one of the greatest martial artists ever from Ocrean software. link button

Miner Willy's first platform outing on the Spectrum by Software Projects may have been the first attempt at two channel music, shame they didn't care about making it in tune! link button
NODES OF YESOD
This beautiful little arcade adventure from Odin had some of the best cartoony characters of any game plus speech and a synthy tune. link button
