In answer to NBC's request to do something special to kick off the 1980 fall TV season, Card Sharks held a special three-week turnabout featuring eight famous game show hosts playing for charity. Four hosts played round-robin style for an entire week, and the two biggest winners advance to the final week, with the overall winner earning a grand prize of $25,000 for his charity.

At this point, the show introduced two new rule changes to put more money into the game. First, if at any time a player gets the exact number on a question, that player earns a $500 bonus in addition to control of the board. And in the Money Cards, players no longer lose if they turn over a double; the bet simply carries over.

After the fan reaction to the game show hosts' tournament back in September, NBC held another three-week turnabout during November sweeps, this time featuring eight celebrities. The format was the same as the September tournament, with four celebrities playing round-robin style each week and the top two winners advancing to the final week for the grand prize of $25,000.
