The media has recently come under some very negative light. Awakening mainly with the death of Princess Di,
hatred for the media was only heightened by the entire Clinton controversy. Now, much of America feels that
members of the media are horrible, and as a result, the derogatory cartoons followed. Wiley perfectly summarized
the situation with his cartoon news junkies. This is not to
say that the media has ever been liked, as in older cartoons, a negative light was also usually placed on the media,
such as Feiffer's "Jerry Springeresque" cartoon psyco-analysis,
which involved turning psychoanalysis into a game show. This cartoon was published in the mid-fifties, showing that
the media wasn't held in high regard then, either.
Calvin and Hobbes have thrown an entirely different light on the media. It is shown both from a parent's point of view,
pointing out the ridiculous amount of time that kids-especially small children-waste on television, and from the view of a child.
This parent's perspective is shown in memories and
commercial break. A kid's perspective is shown in
falling anvils,
wrong channels, and
no tv?.
