Demolition bringing about end to Windmill gas station

Neighbors brought out lawn chairs and blankets from their garages Wednesday afternoon to witness a backhoe demolishing a Holland landmark.

H&M Demolition Co. began to demolish the Windmill Gas Station that was built in the 1920s at 32nd Street and 160th Avenue in southern Park Township.

"I hate to see the building go, but it's in pretty rotten shape," Leon Schaddelee said.

Schaddelee has lived across the street from the gas station at 1652 32nd St., for about 35 years. He said that since the business stopped selling gasoline two years ago, the property has increasingly become an eyesore.

"Every time it changes hands it goes downhill. There's been nothing in the way of maintenance and no cleanup at all," he said.
