This page should give you some info about Magic: the Gathering in Cape Town, South Africa (yep we do play it here!).
Magic only arrived in South Africa with a few Legends boosters and the Revised Edition (apparently there were some Unlimited starters available to those who knew how to get them, but no more than 10 of them) so, of course, virtually no-one plays Type I (Only the lucky few who can afford Multi's - Have you seen the exchange rate of the Rand to the U.S. Dollar- it's ridiculous!). We have run official DCI Type II tournamets weekly since 16 November 1997. I'm going to be posting all the results of the tournaments here soon, as well as the winning decks. For the moment you can check out the results and rankings at
Wizard's Books one of our local hobby stores and host of the weekly tourneys.

News from Capetown:
9 July 1998: Well, after about five months of slow trade, Magic has finally begun to pickup again in Cape Town. It's still not quite what it used to be in the great years of the Ice Age but at least it's improved substantially from just before Fifth Ed. As for tournaments, the Stronghold & Exodus prereleases went off quite well. I only participated in the Stronghold, and traded the Mox Diamond I got for two Necropotences and a Ruination. I'm not much impressed by the new mox...blech! What a load of crap!
Then there was the Black Lotus Type I tournament: Now that was great! First prize of an unlimited Black Lotus. Second prize an Alpha Orcish Oriflamme, third an unlimited Sinkhole. All of the top eight prizes also included a number of Type II boosters. I played using my red-white Land's Edge-LandTax deck. It performed well enough to get me one-point short of a place in the top sixteen (and two very satisfying "yes-I-did-just-drop-10-lands-in-one-go!" games), but I didn't really expect too much from it in a tournament which turned out to be ruled by predominantly blue decks.
Anyway first prize went to Jordan Boyle who played a well-tuned blue-green with Erhnams and Serendibs producing most of the firepower coupled with enough permission to push the fustration factor through the roof. CLAW's very own Andrew Mitchell took second, playing a four colour deck making effective use of the Enduring Renewal, Shieldsphere, Goblin Bombardment combination. Andrew's deck was also backed up by permission as well as a whole stack of tutors (10 in total I think).
