NZSSES Conference 2007
Talking and Walking Sustainability
NZSSES wish to announce that the 2nd International Conference on Sustainability Engineering and Science is being held 20-23 February 2007, at the Faculty of Engineering, The University of Auckland. The conference is again being hosted by NZSSES (NZ Society for Sustainability Engineering and Science). The Increasing the topic of sustainability is being discussed, and as such many corporate companies and businesses are developing sustainability groups within their organisations. The Local Government Act now gives local authorities a mandate to take the lead in achieving sustainable development locally. The Government has developed the Programme of Action - Sustainable Development for New Zealand, with its focus on water quality and allocation, energy, sustainable cities, and child and youth development, but what does this all mean? How is this interpreted by other organisations, and even by other countries?? What is happening in reality? "

Slim hopes of cutting greenhouse gases
Scientists are becoming uneasy about New Zealand's rising greenhouse gas emissions, and hopes of reaching a 2012 target are fading.
This country's emissions are 20 per cent above the 1990 level that it was due to reach by the deadline.
New Zealand's greenhouse gases continue to rise above agreed levels, said Landcare Research science leader Dr David Whitehead.
'We are doing a hopeless job of reaching the target that we have agreed to. We were obliged to meet our target because of our agreement in the Kyoto Protocol, but rather than coming down, our target has increased,' he said. "

Small car sales hopelessly slow lane to clean air
The higher sales volumes of small passenger vehicles, driven by the fuel price hike alone, is hopelessly small if the country wants to lower fuel use and clean up the air, business leaders say.
The latest sales figures show cash incentives are a must if the country is to achieve a high-volume switch to climate friendly cars within the next five years, the New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development says."

Forest industry is slowly getting beter
A slight rise in the price for export logs seems to have come too late to encourage any extra planting by major forestry companies this season but it is seen as another sign that things are slowly getting better for the forest industry.
Indications are that with the exception of Juken New Zealand, planting this year will consist of restocking areas that have been harvested."

NZ business warned "carbon dog" investments
New Zealand companies need to be aware of a growing international trend to identify companies' carbon emission status and direct investment away from what are called 'carbon dogs'.
The New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development says a new trend is emerging which sees analysts recommending investment in companies reducing greenhouse gas emissions. New funds are being created to channel major investment to those companies."

Peters names Climate Change Ambassador
Foreign Minister Winston Peters today announced the appointment of diplomat Adrian Macey to the new position of Climate Change Ambassador.
?Climate change is widely recognised as one of the most serious and urgent problems affecting the world. It is a global problem that can?t be solved solely by those countries that have committed to limit their greenhouse gas emissions under the Kyoto Protocol,' Mr Peters said. "
