CO2 'highest for 650,000 years'
Current levels of the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere are higher now than at any time in the last 650,000 years.
That is the conclusion of new European studies looking at ice taken from 3km below the surface of Antarctica. "
Forest industry supports Treasury's Kyoto view
The forest industry has welcomed a briefing paper from the Treasury that challenges the Government's policies on implementing the Kyoto Protocol on climate change.
Treasury says that the Government's current Kyoto implementation policies make only a limited contribution to meeting New Zealand's Kyoto obligations - but at a relatively high cost."
No silver bullet for livestock methane
Greenhouse gas researchers say they have strong leads but no "silver bullet" cure for the emissions from farm livestock which make a major contribution to New Zealand's mounting obligations under the Kyoto Protocol.
"Although no methane mitigation technology has been proven we have strong leads identified," Mark Aspin, who heads a Government-backed consortium of scientists, said yesterday.
The Pastoral Greenhouse Gas Research Consortium, based in Wellington, had identified "opportunities" ranging from tackling microbes in the rumen, the first stomach of cattle, deer and sheep, to diet manipulation, and selective breeding of livestock.

Wind farm to go ahead after residents drop costly battle
Auckland's first wind farm is set to go ahead after residents were told they could not win a legal fight. They have also accepted a cash sweetener and a paddock to 'habituate' nervous horses.
The Awhitu Peninsula residents dropped their High Court appeal against the 18-turbine farm, 7km west of Waiuku, on advice from their lawyers.
An Environment Court case that approved the wind farm had cost $200,000, said Awhitu resident Helen Meales.
'This effectively means wind developers can pretty well locate a farm anywhere in New Zealand,' she said.
Genesis had said it would pursue costs against residents' groups if the case continued to the High Court. "
Climate change kit for farmers
Bay of Plenty farmers and communities now have a down-to-earth working guide to help them adapt to climate change, and survive whatever the future brings.
The resource kit, called Adapting to Climate Change in Eastern New Zealand A Farmer Perspective, uses real-life case studies to highlight ways farmers can alter farm practices to better cope with changes in the climate."
Australia rules out new post-Kyoto limits
CANBERRA, - Australia said on Monday negotiating new greenhouse gas emission levels for the Kyoto Protocol is a waste of time, dampening hopes a major environment meeting in Canada will set new targets beyond 2012.
Australia's Environment Minister Ian Campbell said most countries would fail to meet their Kyoto targets and trying to negotiate new limits at an upcoming meeting in Montreal would achieve nothing."
