Major ozone loss over Antarctic
New readings from the European satellite Envisat suggest that this year's southern hemisphere ozone hole may be one of the largest on record.
The hole covers an area of 10 million sq km (four million sq miles) - approximately the same size as Europe"

Big money spent on dairy plan
Dairy InSight is spending $500,000 on a 20-year report that aims to balance the community's environmental expectations with farmers' desire to run their businesses economically.
The leadership group, to be headed by Canterbury dairy farmer John Penno, a Dairy InSight director, will have 90 days to complete its farmer-focused report.
Dairy InSight has invited 10 leaders from science providers, local government, universities and farming to join the group.
The farm research funder has so far confirmed that three of the positions will be filled by representatives from Waikato University, Dairy Farmers of New Zealand and Landcare Research. "

Changes in drought risk with climate change [New Zealand Climate Change Office]
A National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) report commissioned by the Ministry for the Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to describe the likely changes in New Zealand drought risk over the 21st century, under low-medium and medium-high climate change scenarios."

Foresters get carbon credit issue on agenda
The Government is to discuss its appropriation of carbon credits as part of secret talks with forest owners on the costs of the Kyoto climate change treaty.
It has been brought to the negotiating table because a dearth of new tree planting is undermining New Zealand's ability to met its obligations under the agreement.
Meanwhile, a ban on officials entering forests to collect data is hampering the Government's ability to collect the credits. "

NZ study finds good news for clean air
New Zealand scientists have injected some good news into the gloom and doom of global warming by proving the atmosphere's natural cleaning agent is still doing its good work.
A paper published today in one of the world's top science journals, Nature, shows hydroxyl, a reactive molecule of water which acts as a bleaching agent of nasty gases and hydrocarbons in the air, has remained the same over the past 13 years. "

Kyoto boost for West Coast power
A Kawatiri Energy Limited proposal to refurbish the Buller Electric Power Station has been awarded 34,061 internationally tradable emissions units under the government's Projects to Reduce Emissions programme.
'The benefits this scheme is set to deliver are a direct consequence of New Zealand's decision to be part of the global effort to tackle climate change through the Kyoto Protocol,' says Convenor of the Ministerial Group on Climate Change Pete Hodgson.
The Lake Rochfort Hydro project proposal is to refit and operate the Buller Electric Power Station. It includes the installation of a new turbine and repairs to existing water races. If the project proceeds, it has the potential to offset the emissions of around 49,365 tones of carbon dioxide between 2008 and 2012; the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol. It would provide enough power for around 2,300 homes. "

Farmers object to wind farm hampering view
A group of Hawke's Bay farmers say their view of the Te Waka/Maungaharuru range near State Highway 5 between Napier and Taupo should not be 'spoiled' with a windfarm.
Chris Crosse, who lives and works in the Patoka district, said he was bewildered that Hastings District Council could allow the viewshaft of the range to be spoilt.
Hugh Thomsen made his submission to the Hastings District Council's hearings committee because he wanted to 'preserve the profound glory and overwhelming presence' of the range. "

Australian fund bidding for Evergreen set up with Kyoto in mind
An Australian investment fund bidding for most of Evergreen Forests Ltd's land and forestry assets was set up to capitalise on emerging renewable energy markets.
Evergreen is to consider the fund's offer at a special sharehoders meeting in September.
James Fielding Funds Management - an arm of property group Mirvac - set up Australian Sustainable Investments Fund (ASIF) to acquire land with forestry based rental income streams.
ASIF has a brief to add value with strategies such as carbon credit sales, renewable energy incomes and bio diversity and salinity credits.
James Fielding chief executive Adrian Harrington told AAP that as New Zealand is a signatory to the Kyoto protocol, the acquisition will represent a significant platform for ASIF to capitalise on emerging renewable energy and environmental services markets.

Forest association calls for radical government reforms
New Zealand Forest Owners Association President Peter Berg said the industry agenda called for urgent review of the Government?s policies to implement the Kyoto Protocol.
We want to see the Kyoto policies reviewed to introduce market-based incentives for new plantings as well as ensure different resource based sectors are treated equally, he said.

Deep Stream Power for 3,100 Homes: "Deep Stream Power for 3,100 Homes
TrustPower's new Deep Stream enhancement of its Waipori power scheme will be providing power for 3,100 homes by Winter 2007.
The project was granted a Resource Consent last month. It involves channelling existing water flows from Deep Stream to Lake Mahinerangi through a canal and a small head pond. Lake Mahinerangi already feeds TrustPower multi-station Waipori hydro scheme. Placed within the canal system will be two 2.5 MW generator units made surplus by upgrades to TrustPower's Coleridge power station"

Climate change policy review
New Zealand Climate Change Office
The Government has directed officials to undertake a review of current climate change policy settings and objectives, and to report back to Cabinet by 31 October 2005.
The decision to conduct a review recognises that the context for New Zealand's climate change policies has changed. The current policies are a set of first steps that were designed in a relatively benign environment. That environment has now changed. Some of the changes we have seen have been the faster than expected growth in emissions, particularly in transport and changes to our forest sink position.
The recent release of revised forecasts of greenhouse emissions is one indication of how the context has changed.

New Zealand Steel greenhouse gas agreement
As part of ongoing efforts to cut emissions of greenhouse gas, to protect jobs and the international competitiveness of New Zealand Steel, the government and the company today announced that they are to enter talks for a Negotiated Greenhouse Agreement (NGA).
'Climate change is direct threat to New Zealand's economy, environment and way of life,' says Convenor of the Ministerial Group on Climate Change Pete Hodgson.
'Those firms that engage with the NGA process recognise the need to take action on climate change at the same time as structuring their operations to remain competitive in a world that now prices emissions. I'm pleased to acknowledge New Zealand Steel's leadership in this regard.' "

Fanfare be matched by action?
With some fanfare a week ago in Vientiane, Laos, six nations launched an Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate.
The United States, China, India, Japan, Korea and Australia represent nearly half the world's economic output, population, energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
Clearly, then, any steps this group takes to 'develop, deploy and transfer cleaner, more efficient technologies and to meet national pollution reduction, energy security and climate change concerns' are to be welcomed. "
