Pastoral farming is still the heart of the New Zealand economy. It thrives because this country has an equable, stable climate. That is why climate change threatens our economic interests and the long-term sustainability of New Zealand farming.

Jim Hopkins: Please, you moo cows, contain your methane for Kyoto

Power station lying idle
New Plymouth power station, just converted by its owner Contact Energy into a dual-fuel plant, is lying idle as its owners and Taranaki local authorities negotiate over the discharge of fumes from its chimney.
Contact Energy has finished a $10 million upgrade of the 450 megawatt, natural gas-fired station that allows it to also run on fuel oil.

Greenpeace activists board coal ship in climate protest
Greenpeace activists said yesterday they had boarded a coal ship at Port Tauranga to attract public attention to the climate change debate.
The 187m ship Almar was carrying the first imports of coal for Genesis' Huntly power station, to provide extra electricity this winter.
Greenpeace climbers hung a banner off the ship's side which read "Coal Cooks the Climate", and floated a line of 10 large windmills beside the ship to symbolise an alternative source of energy.

National pledges to repeal 'flatulence tax'
The National Party has pledged to repeal any so-called "flatulence tax" the Government imposes on farmers. The Government has announced it will levy farmers $8.4 million a year to fund research on emission reductions needed to meet New Zealand's commitment to lower greenhouse gas emissions under the Kyoto Protocol.

Electricity: growth and sustainability
Hodgson address to the Electricity Engineers' Association of NZ Conference 2003, Christchurch Convention Centre
You've chosen as your conference theme the idea of "the growth dilemma", asking how we are going to ensure the electricity sector meets New Zealand’s future economic growth in a sustainable manner.
Calling it a dilemma implies a fundamental conflict between growth and sustainability. I'm going to argue, to the contrary, that we can cope with growing demand for electricity while continuing to make progress towards a more sustainable electricity industry.
We can achieve this by advancing on three fronts:
· increasing investment in renewable sources of energy for electricity generation;
· increasing the opportunities for demand side participation in the electricity market; and
· increasing energy efficiency and conservation.

Hodgson: Greenhouse levy on farmers is a "win-win" tax
Climate change Minister Pete Hodgson was forced during Question Time today to admit that a controverisal $8.4 million government levy is really a tax.
The levy will see farmers forking up $8.4 million as part of a compulsory contribution to research on the reduction of greenhouse emissions from livestock.
But Mr Hodgson made no apologies for the plan, and argued that it could prove a "win win" for farmers.
In return for the levy, farmers will be exempted from paying carbon charges on livestock methane emissions. Farmers had argued that such a tax would be ruinous.

Waste coal seam methane (WCSM) power plant get go-ahead
ENERGY Developments (ENE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Anglo Coal for the development of a nominal 32 megawatt waste coal seam methane (WCSM) power plant at the German Creek Coal Mine approximately 800 kilometres north west of Brisbane, reports AAP.ENE was awarded funding of up to $15.47 million in 2001 under the Federal Government's Greenhouse Gas Abatement (GGAP) programme for an 11 MW project at German Creek that was to use ENE's innovative carburetted gas turbine (CGT) technology. This revised project, based on conventional technology, offers a significant increase in power generated and results in greenhouse gas abatement equivalent to 1.2 million tonnes of CO2 annually.

Taranaki environment
But the news on greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, which are contributing to warmer world temperatures, higher seas and extreme weather patterns, is not so positive.
On a per capita basis, Taranaki emits four to five times the national average of methane and three to six times the national average of carbon dioxide.

Media Release Gerry Brownlee Should NZ taxpayers fund Aussie investment?
The National Party’s appalled by fresh suggestions that state-owned Meridian Energy is looking at a multi-million dollar expansion into Australian wind farms.
"How can the Government justify the emergency $200 million tax for future power generation, when its own company is spending more than $1.2 billion across the Tasman?" asks National Party Energy spokesman Gerry Brownlee.

Boost of $3m for energy saving
Energy efficiency has been given a Government funding boost in a post-Budget announcement by Energy Minister Pete Hodgson.
An extra $2.9 million will be allocated to the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority to pay for new programmes aimed at cutting energy wastage.
