British Environment Minister Michael Meacher slammed Australia's inaction during an international conference in London, The Weekend Australian Financial Review reported today.

A statement on Global Warming (P. Barrett)
Evidence for global warming - and why we need to take action
The following statement was prepared by Professor Peter Barrett FRSNZ (Director of the Antarctic Centre, Victoria University of Wellington), and is a slighly amended version of an article originally published in the "Evening Post".
Whanganui flow essential - Genesis
State-Owned Enterprise Genesis Power says Whanganui River water is necessary for the continued operation of the Tongariro hydro scheme, in an apparent warning to its government shareholders.
The Government has promised Moutoa Garden protesters that it will, if necessary, protect their interests in the river by overturning recently approved resource consents.

Cool look behind the hot air
The greenhouse effect All sides of the debate agree there is a natural "greenhouse effect" in which gases such as carbon dioxide absorb heat from the sun and keep the earth roughly 32C warmer than it would be otherwise.
This happens because the sun's rays that get through the atmosphere as visible light get absorbed by the earth. Much of the energy is then radiated back from the earth in longer waves known as infra-red energy.

Scientists spell out our hot and sticky future ...By SIMON COLLINS science reporter
It may seem hard to believe right now, but the long-term forecast for the next 20 years is hot and muggy.
Weather forecasters at the Meteorological Society's annual conference at Sky City, Auckland, say the weather has switched from a long-run cool period, which lasted from 1978 to 1998, to a long-run warm period which is likely to last until about 2020.

Paying the price to keep cool
New Zealand is on track to ratify the Kyoto Protocol, the international treaty to curb emissions of the "greenhouse" gases blamed for global warming, by the end of the year.
On Wednesday night, Parliament passed the Climate Change Response Bill, the legal framework for ratification of the protocol.

Greenpeace praises Government leadership on Kyoto ratification
Auckland, 14 November 2002: Greenpeace today welcomed the passing of legislation that enables New Zealand to join international efforts to halt global climate change.
“Despite scare-mongering from a small segment of industry - particularly the coal industry - and the short-sightedness of some political parties, the Government has shown leadership in ratifying Kyoto,” said Robbie Kelman, Greenpeace New Zealand Climate Campaigner.
Political parties that voted against ratification of Kyoto are destabilising global efforts to try and solve the problem of global warming.”
Global warming is the most serious environmental threat the world faces. Retreating glaciers, the death of coral reefs and increased incidences of El Nino –bringing drought and fire to Australia – highlight the very real dangers of climate change.
“New Zealand’s future energy choice, as Maui gas runs out, is clear - a large uptake of renewable energy which this country is well placed to achieve with its abundant wind resource.
Greenpeace supports the Minister of Energy Pete Hodgson’s vision that, ‘We will be putting this nation in a position to make a measured transition to a carbon-constrained economy … ‘
“New Zealand now needs a national energy plan to drive the Minister’s vision.”
New Zealand to ratify Kyoto Protocol in weeks
The Government would ratify the Kyoto Protocol within the next few weeks now that Parliament had passed the Climate Change Response Bill, Science Minister Pete Hodgson said today.

NGC seals Mighty River deal - gas fired and renewable
NGC has agreed to sell its half stake in the Southdown power station to Mighty River Power. Mighty River, a state-owned power generator, will also buy NGC's contract to purchase 100 per cent of all electricity generated by the small Rotokawa geothermal station near Taupo.

Carter Holt Harvey weighs in for court bout on biofuel cogeneration
Carter Holt Harvey says it has been sold a multimillion-dollar lemon by New Zealand's biggest power company, state-owned Genesis Power, and engine maker Rolls-Royce.
In court papers filed in the High Court at Auckland, Carter Holt Harvey says NZ's largest "co-generation plant", at Kinleith, which uses wood waste to make steam and electricity, is fundamentally flawed and does not work as promised.

The Australian: $1b solar power project
