Warming up to Kyoto Protocol
Is the Government naive or strategic in its urgent rush to ratify the Kyoto Protocol?
That remains a legitimate topic for debate, even as legislation enabling the ratification makes its way through Parliament. We've heard a lot about the positions taken by Australia, the United States and Canada, but maybe less about the views of valuable trading partners such as the European Union and Japan.

Kangaroo key to cutting methane
Like New Zealand, Australia has problems with farmyard flatulence contributing to the output of global-warming greenhouse gases.
But scientists plan to tackle the problem by studying a creature better adapted to local conditions - the kangaroo.
Kangaroos have a similar diet to cattle, but produce no methane, one of the gases implicated in global warming.
Scientists in Queensland believe that bacteria found in kangaroo stomachs, which help them to process their food, could be used to reduce emissions by the nation's 23 million cows and 170 million sheep.

Funds cut 'crazy' in view of Kyoto pact
A surprise official funding decision has axed world-leading research into the rate at which trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air.
The Foundation for Research, Science and Technology has slashed Forest Research's funding for the project from $720,000 to just $110,000 a year.

Energy savers well rewarded
Businesses have a lot of "low-hanging fruit" in the form of energy savings, says energy efficiency expert Rob Bishop, but several barriers must be overcome to gather that harvest.
He said energy audits commonly identified ways of cutting a commercial building's energy use by 30 per cent through a package of measures, with an average simple payback period of one year.

Cashing in on global warming
Business opportunities and cost savings arising out of moves to combat global warming could be worth more than $350 million a year to New Zealand, says the New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development.
In a report released yesterday, the council highlighted:
* Energy savings in commercial buildings which, even with an investment hurdle of a 20 per cent internal rate of return, could save $109 million a year.
