It is an indie band's dream to produce their own record, tour across Canada, have their music on a soundtrack, appear on Much Music and get their videos played on it. For Vibrolux, it is a reality. The band has been together for only two years, but they have already accomplished vast achievements that would be to any other band's envy.
"It's been excellent. We've been very fortunate that we can do what we did off our debut indie album. When we were recording, I definately knew that we had something really special," says singer Steve Clark.
It is hard to believe that with their unique sound and impressive resume, the band is still yet to be signed.
"We're waiting," tells Clark. "We've completed a new three song demo and we're going to shop with that. We want to aim for the majors, so we'll be looking at all that in the new year."
The group made another demo last year with I Mother Earth's Jagori Tanna at the producing helm. A few offers came in, but it was nothing to the band's liking.
"We were able to build up a lot of interest around the band. It was all positive. A few things were floating about, but nothing that we wanted to settle with. So we're going to wait until we really the mark."
Vibrolux was formed a little over two years ago with singer Steve Clark and keyboardist Julian Durzi. The band recently saw some roster changes. They now have a refular drummer, Greg Wilkinson, and guitarist Sean Kelly has been brought on to complete the Vibrolux circle.
Their self-titled debut album was recorded in Clark's basement over two years ago. The record garnered some rave reviews from both critics and fans. Though they are compared often to bands like Jesus and Mary Chain, their unique blend of dance - pop, electronica and rock makes them stand out. Their singles have been played on radio stations and have been commission for television soundtracks for shows like Ooh La La, Fashion Television and La Femme Nikita. The video for their track "Drown" earned heavy rotation on Much Music. The video was filmed in a bomb shelter outside of Ottawa and Vibrolux is the first band to have filmed inside the nuclear defense facility.
"It had a lot of cool tunnels and it was an excellent location. The concept was through the director and it was an amazing experience. It made it to the Top 30 on Much Music."
The group is hoping to get some funding to record their next album. They already have several songs lined up and are awaiting the opportunity to get into the studio as soon as they can.
"It's been a while now, going on two years," replied Clark. "It's high time to get our new songs out there. "We have two albums worth of material sitting in the can. We would like to get our record out as a major release. The indie route is cool and we can do our thing, but it's better to have the big money machine behind you to promote the record and give you tour support."
Vibrolux has toured Canada extensively already. They went all the way to Vancouver and received a positive repsonse from audiences. This July, they will be a part of the Pepsi Taste Tour as the opening act for Esthero. The band's live show is incredibly intense and Clark's vocals have a depth and amplitude that are mind-blowing. Vibrolux is also no stranger to the festival circuit. They have played North by Northeast for three consecutive yeras and they also made two appearances at Canadian Music Week.
It is incredible how fast things have progressed with Vibrolux in ths short time of their existence. But do not think that the quick success have flown to the heads of the band. Rather, it is the complete opposite. The band has their feet planted firmly on the ground and is optimistic about the direction they are heading in.
"We're feeling really positive. We're writing some cool tunes and we look forward to performing. We put a lot of hard work into this band and into making it happen. Our plans are to shop the demo, getting a record deal, making the album, releasing the album and touring the world. That's the way we would love it to go."
The distinctiveness, dedication and energy that Vibrolux possesses will certinaly be an asset to any label who picks them up. So three words to the A & R reps - get them fast!
