AP Contest Program

The NMRA has assembled a Model Contest program to promote the model building aspect of the hobby while recognizing the skills of the individual.

Though this program is explained in detail on the NMRA Home Page , we will attempt to demystify, provide additional information / hints and application forms in this forum.

As part of the NMRA services to the members, the St Lawrence Division is delivering the Achievement Program through Meets (National, Regional & Divisional), by appointments and education. It is our objective to provide information regarding this program, clarification on points and supply helpful hints to assist in your modeling entries.

Contest vs AP vs Appearance

Before we launch into the details, a quick tour of the program is in order.
Through your exposure to the NMRA you will notice the three terms; Contest, Achievment Program and Appearance used when referring to contests at model meets. Each one is different though there is some commonality between them.

Contest: In it's pure sense, this is a forum where models are entered into a category in a contest and the best model wins. The models are judged by an official panel against the NMRA AP standards. The model may also win a AP Merit Award if it scores 87 1/2 points or better.
Contests usualy appear at Regional and National meets while on occasion at the Divisional level.

Achievement Program: Similar to a contest except that the models are not competing against each other. There is no over all prize or trophy, but a Merit Award issued if the model obtains 87 1/2 points or better. The AP judging is usualy offered as part of a NMRA Contest event but can also be performed at meets and by appointment at your home since it is not a 'contest' but more akin to a high school exam.

Appearance: The NFR offers this additional category at it's Regional Meets whose purpose is to attrack models in a non competitive format. Like the Contest and AP programs, the models are seperated into catagories (e.g. Steam, Diesel, structures) and the meet attendees have the opportunity to vote on their favourite models. A form of Popular Vote. Models are not formaly judged against a standard or each other.
