Photo was probably taken
shortly prior to her marriage
to Israel Pickens Russell,Sr.
"Mattie" was a resident of
Lookout Mt., GA near the
present site of the Natural
Bridge on Lookout Mountain.
She kept a Journal, which is
in my personal library inherited from my mother. It began in 1856 and included the "childhood prayer" below:
"To My Mother" by
Israel Pickens Russell,Jr., our grandfather!

"To My Mother"
|
When the Stars at set of Sun,
Watch you from on high,
When the Evening has begun,
Think the LORD is nigh,
All your joys and griefs he knows,
Counts each falling tear,
When to HIM you tell your woes,
Know the LORD will hear
Pick Russell: circa 1885 |
Beginning writing at this early age, little did this loving mother realize that in 1951 a 76 year-old father... Pickens Russell, Jr. would proudly write in the local newspapers of his own eldest son, SANDERS RUSSELL, and their partnership in a winning racing stable known as RUSSELL STABLES and their harness horses success at Roosevelt Raceway, Long Island, NY! |
