How to make a site that works

Hello, my name is Simon Dann and I am the webmaster of this site. Site bulding is an art that can be taught. You dont need to know the HTML or any of that crap to make a great site. All you need is a bit of imagenation and a few hours a week spare for mananence.

When building a site you should think of:

  1. What it is going to be about, yes there is no point in makeing a site with no purpos its just not worth it and a huge waist of time.
  2. What people do you want to visit your site: and again its one of those biggns, it dont matter who visits the site its who the site is built for. In other words who do you want to visit the site?
  3. Mantanece : Yes you have to mainain your site otherwise it will loose its surprise and people wont return to it. Every week you should change something or add something and on the home page tell all the updates and future updates this keeps them comeing back.
  4. Stuff : Well not just stuff as there is no other way of describeing this other than stuff, this includes pictures, sounds, vidios, interactive content and who you are going to host your site with. A big site needs alot of space and I dont see why anyone would need 800MB or even 100MB of disk space for there site unless they are going to be uploading hundreds of downloads. So I would say for the beginer 50MB is enough as its big enough for a small site(this one is only 5MB) and as the site expands it can fill the rest of the 50MB and by the time you do that you can move on to a host that gives mroe space or just ask your exsisting one to give more space(I have done this and aslong as you get lost of page views they will be happy to give you more. So I say terrashare is the best it gives 50MB of space and pays you for every page view you get. It also donst advertise on your site apart from ONE pop up that you probably saw when you entered this site and that will only show up on the home page(index.htm).

The three steps to building your site are:

  1. Build site offline and make sure all the links work and stuff is where is should be
  2. Sign up to an online host that gives atleast a min of 50MB ie terrashare
  3. Upload your site with an FTP program ie cuteftp
  4. Update once a week

Now onec you ahve uploaded the first coppy of your site. You need to get a good looking address other than yoursite.terrashare.com so goto com-2.net they will give you your very own www.yourname.com-1.net FREE or your own .com for $5 Add interesting content to your site chat and nessage boards, polls are agood way of getting feedback on the simple thing on your site.

So all of the above put in simple graphics(taken off Sim City (C)Maxis)

1. Get some space on the net terrashare is the BEST.
2. Start building your site start small that way you can grow, instead of building a massave site with 100000 pages which takes years to update and probably will just be ignored by you and your visitors. Try adding search and those little extras that make a site worth re visiting. Try thinking of a idea that people like like sms messageing you can make a site on it with its own sms service like this one. And track your visitors, I use bravenet's counter for that. It counts the amount of visitors and logs there visit and records interesting imformation on there computer so that you can make your site easyer to view, bravenet's counter logs the i.p, screen res(so that you can make your site visable to all), screen colours(so that you keep your graphics to what there mashine can show) and other stuff.
3. Keep building, and updateing! There is no such site which has been finnished even msn changes every day so its still being built. You should update your site atleast once a week if you want to keep your visitors.
4. As before keep building! Make a site massave over time add pages and change things if not all at once, over time. Dont stop and think that U should stop now, keep it going and make sure you have a good index or site search or your visitors will turn away.
5. At last we come to the 5th point, keep trying to drive traffic into your site, this will give you the will to continue with the site. Sign your site up to as many banner exchanges as there are(imposible but try!) and to stop your site from filling up with banner ads from all of these exchanges rotate them usieng an external free banner rotation system try Adrotator I recomend them as they are free and I use them for this site, they are also the only service that alows you to rotate html and give stats.

Remeber a website is like a theme park, it has to have something that will make them keep on comeing....
