India is a great country of rich heritage and a glorious past. She is the home of many great religions and has given the world some of its highest philosophy. Our people by nature and culture are peace - loving people, eager to be friendly with the nations of the world at large. That is what has given us a status in the world of today.
Geographically, our country is a unit in its self, with its own distinctive features which separate it from the rest of Asia. Being a large country, there are many diversities to be found in relief, climate, vegetation, animals etc. But despite that, the country has a unity that pervades through all aspects - physical, social, cultural and historical.
Our country always held a great position of great respect and esteem so that even an ocean was named after her by the ancient geographers.. Note from the map how our country holds a commanding position with respect to the Indian Ocean and a central position.
Our country is quite large, being the seventh among the largest countries of the world. The area of our country is 3,287,782 square kilometers. This is about 2.5 % of the total land area of the world. Most of our states are as large as some of the countries of Europe and Africa. The country extends for 2,933 kilometers east to west and 3,214 kilometers north to south.
India lies totally in the northern hemisphere between 37*N and 8*N latitude. From east to west, India lies between longitude 68*E and 97*E. The Tropic of Cancer passes halfway through the country dividing the northern part into the Torrid zone and the southern part into the Temperate zone.
