The American colonials, separated from Great Britain by a great Ocean, had developed their own interpretation of the rights of free Englishmen. They felt no obligation to burden themselves "unjustly" to support the King and Parliament in London. Thus, when the mercantilist Parliament of George III attempted to tighten its controls on its colonials and imposed taxes to recover the costs of its colonial expansionism, the people of the American colonies resisted. They were used to governing them- selves with little interference from their home country and they refused to comply with burdensome regulations imposed from afar. As Parliament increased its efforts to impose its control, resistance became firmer and bolder -escalating from a determination to stand up for the rights of an English- man to a bold declaration of independence from Great Britain. |
