IMPORTANT NOTICE

Hello felow collectors, at last I am back on line. I have now departed from Oman and have returned to the UK. Unfortunately my contact who was going to keep me up to date with new phonecards has let me down.

I have limited numbers of most of the Omani cards but I am unable to obtain further supplies once these are exhausted.

My new email address is fred.winters@btopenworld.com

INTRODUCTION
Situated at the extreme South-Eastern corner of the Arabian peninsula, Oman remains completely unspoiled by its contact with the western world. Its coastline ranks amongst the the most beautiful in the world, with scenery ranging from magnificent beaches leading to fertile plains and rugged mountains that run into a sea of perfect blue. Its people are often called the gentlemen of the Gulf and their hospitality is second to none. You cannot fail to be impressed by the warmth and friendliness of a people who leave a lasting impression on everyone they meet. Oman is a country of forts, falajes (irrigation conduits), frankincense, date palms, desert plains, spectacular mountains, souqs (markets), spicy smells and cobalt blue skies. Rich in heritage and culture it has everything to tempt and amaze, and all of this is portrayed on the Phone Cards of Oman

Oman has witnessed ever since the emergence of the renaissance era, a rapid development in various fields of social and economic life in fulfillment of the goals proclaimed by H.M. The Sultan soon after taking power.

One such important field is the telecommunications operated by the Omantel (Oman Telecommunications Company) , formerly the General Telecommunications Organization (GTO) which has achieved significant progress. In this respect, the country has become at par with the most developed countries in the world. In line with this progress GTO introduced a phone card system which facilitates rapid communication by use of payphones which are widely available to the public.

The introduction of card operated payphones dates back to 1985 when they were installed in limited numbers in the Governorates of Muscat and Dhofar. In 1988 , a contract was entered into for the supply of a more advanced payphone system. This system started operation in 1989 and since then the number of card operated payphones continues to increase and replace the coin operated pay phones. By the end of October 1995 the total of card operated payphones had risen to 3343 spreading throughout the regions and operated through GTO normal or mobile telephone networks. GTO provides this service widely in residential and commercial areas, in hospitals, filling stations and in the the public transport buses for long distance routes such as Muscat - Salalah and Muscat - Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

Welcome to this my first attempt at constructing a web site. It is hoped that you will find it of interest and may be, even useful. New phone cards are issued at numerous, but irregular intervals. I will endeavor to update the site when these issues occur. I would be pleased to receive your comments, suggestions or what have you at fwinters@bigfoot.com
The cards illustrated on the Phone Card Pages are a complete record of ALL the phone cards issued by the Oman Telecommunications Company (Omantel) formally GTO, from 1985 to the present time. Cards with an issue quantity of less than 25,000 or that are difficult to obtain have the card information printed in red.
