A topsecret project of the Incom Corporation before it's assets were seized by the Empire, the XWing has proven itself to be the most versatile starfighter in the Alliance's arsenal. Unfortunately, the XWing's complex systems and rare alloys have delayed production of significant numbers of this fighter for years.. The XWing is has been criticized by some as being too well balanced. Even though the XWing combines remarkable maneuverability, reliable shields, and a generous weapons compliment for its profile, it can be extremely dangerous for new pilots. The differential thrust provided by its four fusel engines, it's highmass electromagnetic gyros and precise bursts of retrothrust fire give a critical edge and level of control which can encourage new pilots to take reckless risks with it. In noncombat situations, and especially when flying through an atmosphere where an aerodynamic lifting surface is required, the wing foils are locked together. The astromech droid monitors systems, does all onboard maintenance, both routine and emergency and lifesupport systems, as well as augmenting the fighter's computer capabilities. It even flies the fighter when circumstances permit, assists with navigation and holds preset hyperspace jump coordinates. The primary sensor packets and the detectorjamming unit are found in the nose of the XWing. Behind that sits the sensor computer, communications antenna and flight control computer. The pilot controls the pitch and roll of the XWing through the use of control pedals found at the feet of the cockpit. In addition to the fairly straightforward flight control systems, comprehensive cockpit displays allow the pilot to monitor and control energy distribution throughout the fighter's systems during combat. The XWing's laser generators operate at the safety limits to generate maximum destructive power and the long cannons of the Xwing develop longer range for its lasers, which can engage an on coming enemy before they can return fire. . |
